(More customer reviews)I bought this product with low expectations, which may be partly why I'm giving it 5 stars. I have a 24 gallon aquapod that has 150watt metal halide with room temperatures reaching as much as 80 degrees. I've had no problem using a powerful fan blowing over the surface of the water and connected to a controller to keep the water temperature at 78.0 degrees.
I bought this chiller because I wanted to have more cooling power for the summer, but didn't want to buy or install an expensive chiller. I have it set so that if the water temperature reaches 78.5 it turns on, then if the temperature reaches 78.9 the fan turns on too. Since I've had it, the fan has only turned on once for a few minutes. At that time the room temperature had reached 80 degrees. I don't think you can rely on this chiller by itself in hot weather, but if you have this chiller and a fan on a 25 gallon tank or less, I'm sure you could maintain the water temperature at 78 degrees even if the room temperature got to 85 degrees.
While this chiller might not be able to power down the temperature the way an inline chiller would, I feel that it exactly offsets the heat from the metal halide. I give it 5 stars based on price, easy install, and because it makes no noise.

Efficient: converts electricity directly into cooling power Reliable: the fan is the only moving part Easy to Install: one hole, one nut Safe low voltage operation Environmentally Friendly: no gasses or chemicals 1-year manufacturer`swarranty from purchase dateThe IceProbe is the ideal cooling solution for small aquariums. This quiet, reliable, and efficient chiller uses advanced thermoelectric technology to directly covert electricity into cooling power. With its threaded probe, nylon nut, and silicon washer, the IceProbe, can be easily bulkheaded through a 1.25" hole into siphon overflows, prefilters, sumps, or even directly into acrylic aquariums.A single IceProbe can cool 10 gallons of water 6-8F below ambient air temperature in a standard aquarium. Multiple IceProbes can be used in a single aquarium to achieve higher temperature differentials. The IceProbe provides continuous chilling power. A separate temperature controller must be used to turn the the device on or off at predetermined temperatures.Weighing in at only 2 pounds, the IceProbe? is powered by a separate 12 volt D.C. power supply and draws less than 50 watts.
