(More customer reviews)I work in a cold chamber test facility that tests engines, automobiles, machines, etc down to -40. We were looking to replace the current glove we use, which is basically an insulated mechanics glove. This Youngstown pair was the first to arrive. A few days later, the Carhartt and Refrigiwear gloves arrived and the Youngstowns have basically sat at the bottom of pile ever since.
The cuff and water resistance were nice, but the gloves just didn't keep our hands warm. Youngstown must be based out of So California, because their claim of 'keep your hands warm and dry in the harshest of winter conditions' isn't very accurate. At -18C, they lasted 10-15 minutes before my hands were too cold to continue working. That isn't much different that our previous gloves. I didn't bother trying them any colder.
Gloves needed to keep your hands warm at the temps we work at sacrifice dexterity to do so. We wear glove liners so that we can pull our hands out, grab something like a nut or a tool, and put the glove back on with minimal impact to our hand temp. The liners also help with added insulation. We weren't able to do that with these gloves. They're sized very small which made using liners impossible for most and the liners pull out with your hand. Double fail.
Get any type of oil on tools you're trying to use, etc (which is inevitable where I work), and it becomes very difficult to operate the tools with these gloves on. Ratchets like to slip right out of your hand. I don't mean dunk them in a jug of oil, just a small amount you might normally get from doing an oil change will cause problems.
Long story short....I wouldn't buy these gloves to work below 0C. But at temps that warm, you can find gloves with better dexterity.
