(More customer reviews)I bought the All Terrain Cooler because I was tired of wheeled coolers with plastic wheels. Yes, they roll, but if there's a rock in the path or a crack in the sidewalk, they would get stuck and sometimes pull out of your hand... dumping the contents. And if you had to take one on the beach, fuggedaboutit!
The cooler does require assembly, but it only takes 2-3 minutes. You put the wheels on the axle and tap the endcap onto the axle with a hammer, then insert the axle onto the cooler. Easy.
The wheels have two positions:
1. One as the picture shows where the wheels are under the cooler which makes it easy to pull because the the cooler is almost centered over the wheels. That equals less fatigue when pulling. To get the wheels in this position, lift up the rear of the cooler and there's a little kicktab that you can step on (as the wheels are locked in the second position, explained below), and the axle swings below the cooler. Lower it and you're on your way.
2. You can flip the wheels out so the cooler sits level and doesn't roll around when in a car. Essentially you just have to lift up the rear of the cooler and the axle will swing out (you may have to tap it with your foot to get it past the pivot point), then set the cooler down.
The large handle up front seems to flex but it doesn't break. The only thing that I've added is a strap (a nylon dog leash) to the front handle to extend it so my feet don't hit the cooler. I'm 6'3" so my stride is longer than most.
I have the 70 qt. size and I've had 66 beers (combination of glass & cans) with 20 pounds of ice and that pretty much filled it. It fits in the trunk of my Mercury Milan in either direction (barely) or the back seat. This cooler rolls easily over sidewalks cracks, rocks, pea stone, bricks, grass, and sand. It always sparks conversation and envy.
