(More customer reviews)I've been using this product for almost a year. My cat is very food obsessed. Before getting this, he would meow at me and bug me to feed him all of the time. Now, he just continues to paw at the magical giver of food close to meal times. Since the feeding times are consistent, he has a pretty good idea of when it will turn. Originally he pawed at it obsessively all day until he figured that out. He has never once managed to open it despite trying *very* hard. He can spin it backward to the empty compartments, but it never deprives him of his future meals when the time arrives. When it gets very close to meal time, he is often able to push it open to the next slot, but this is only possible about 15-30 minutes before the scheduled time.
I would urge anyone who gets this to read the directions carefully and completely. When I first read them, it seemed complicated, but once you understand how it works, it's a breeze. I would also encourage people to use it for awhile in a supervised capacity before relying on it to work while you are away for an extended period. I use mine all of the time, so I have confidence that it is set correctly when I will be out late or am away over night. The battery life also seems very good. I usually change it before vacations for my own peace of mind, but it has never actually gone dead in regular use.
This is a very useful product that ensures my cat gets consistent regular meals, despite the twists and turns of my daily life. It has been a dream separating me from the food in my cat's mind.

(More customer reviews)This product is poorly designed. I've had multiple instances where my poor cat was not feed when I was out or was feed the entire amount at one time. The battery is on the bottom of the unit and the cat has knocked it out trying to get to her food and went for two days without being feed! The plastic cap also comes off easily and the cat can advance the dial and get feed all at one time. The last straw was when the cat opened the plastic cap and broke the timing mechanism and didn't feed for 40 hours! I threw this unit in the trash last night. It's just not reliable!!!!!

(More customer reviews)This thing is poorly constructed and the electronics are lousy. It did not hold up to minimal use. We set 6 of the 8 programs so it would feed 6 times per day.
After a few weeks, the electronics started to fry: the recorded voice sounded full of static and the tray would not turn fully to the next position, leaving our cat hungry. If you can't rely on this to feed your cat every time, it's not worth having!
The plastic top has a round center that "snaps on" and is the "handle" for the top. This fell off and would not snap on again.
As far as usability, the top rotates around 8 "bowls" instead of the bowls rotating underneath, which means the "feeding bowl" is constantly moving. If you want to put this in a corner, the "feeding bowl" will sometimes be facing out, and sometimes be nearly inaccessible. This means the unit takes up more space than necessary because it can't be tucked away, it has to be accessible from all sides.
I am thorougly disappointed. I am trying one other product like this (from a different manufacturer, via mightypets) where the bowl rotates instead of the top. If that doesn't work out, I'm going back to a plain dish and manual feeding.

(More customer reviews)I ordered this because I have an overweight cat that was stealing extra food from a Lebistro Feeder. I love the flexiblity of automatic feeders, so I had to find something he couldn't steal from. So far, so good! My cat has not been appearing to manipulate the feeder to get extra food and I like the flexibility of being able to feed almost any portion up to 24 hours per day. So, I am very pleased with this product. I just noticed they changed the bowl from metal to the new one pictured above, which is not what I received. Would have liked the new bowl- with the chute cover the cat can not access all of his food without taking his paw to get it out of the dish. (not a big issue, just looks like the bowl pictured is much wider and may make less noise when the food actually drops vs. the smaller metal bowl.) Overall, I highly recommend this product.

(More customer reviews)I've had this automatic feeder for 2 years. It works great and has eliminated the screaming my cat used to do before meals. Now she just sits in front of the feeder and waits for it to go off. It holds 6 meals (but one is exposed so it really only has 5 meals). The cover rotates to expose a new meal every 6, 12, or 24 hours. My cat has been very abusive to the machine (because she can smell the food in it) however she has not been able to break the cover or get to any of the other food compartments. If you do force the machine to go backwards the motor will kick on and rotate the cover back to the correct position. My only real problem with the feeder is that the motor is quite loud and drains the battery very quickly. Also as a note, there is no way to set the hour on the feeder, it just goes off 6,12, or 24 hours after you turned it on. So if you want it to always go off at 7am you would need to turn the power on at 7am/pm the first time.

Cat Mate C20 Automatic Pet Feeder Review

(More customer reviews)I bought my first one at least 10 years ago -- and I actually still have it. I also bought 3 more because they were SO good -- now aside from the usual teeth marks on the edges of the doors and dishes, my cats have not yet broken in.
I had 3 cats at one time and each cat had to eat in their own room with the door closed -- no big deal because they had all the amenities in whatever room they had been placed. Now I have just two (RIP Princess -- 13 yrs old, taken by Cancer). La Large One will steal whatever food is not secured - so she and Cee Cee have their own separate rooms and their own Cat Mates.
With wet food, the ice packs are good for 14-16 hours maximum, depending on the weather -- even with A/C, in the summer the ice packs will melt faster, so I sometimes freeze the 14-16 hr food in its Cat Mate dish before I pop it into the Cat Mate assembly, even WITH the ice pack in the bottom of the assembly (only in the summer)-- the food WILL defrost before the door opens.
The plastic dishes are top-dishwasher safe (for me anyway). The rest of the unit can be wiped with a wet cloth to clean it.
The battery CAN fall out of its niche -- so I would suggest retaining/securing the battery (AA battery) with a bit of mailing tape (AFTER it has been placed inside the battery holder) to ensure that it stays where it belongs and the kitty won't miss a meal or two. Try not to get too much tape on the black box (right above the battery) that contains all the moving clockwork parts.
Turning the dial CLOCKWISE each time you set it will extend the life of the unit.
Sometimes (rare) the dials will pop out of gear -- I've been able to fix that by opening up the little black box (with the clock and gears) on the back of the unit but it is a tricky/delicate operation. I can take apart cars, so perhaps I have a little more experience in working with gizmos.
DON'T drop this unit and it will reward you with many good years. The hinges (where the top of the door swings up) may wear out before the unit does -- I'm a great fan of Mailing tape-- it makes a great emergency hinge, and seems to last a long time. The cats don't care -- as long as the dish door opens.
IF you are feeding outdoor stray/feral cats (and I hope they are all spayed and neutered), I would suggest leaving the feeders in a protected area and remember that raccoons and other critters will try (perhaps successfully) to break into it and possibly harm the kitties as well. Just a word of caution on my part.
IF your catsitter is being entrusted to feed your cats using the Cat Mate C20 feeders please post the instructions on the wall or fridge where s/he can see them -- both of my cat sitters had never used the Cat Mate C20 feeders before, so the instructions were extremely helpful to them (and my kitties!!)

(More customer reviews)When I tried to use this ice pack in my C-20 feeder, it seemed to be too big by less than a quarter inch. I contacted the sellers who told me I had a slightly older version of the C-20 which is why it didn't work. They were very apologetic and offered a refund. Because I found no alternative products, I threw the ice packs in the freezer and decided to give it one more shot. To my amazement, when frozen, the ice packs expanded in such a way that they actually fit into the feeder with just a little push. Now that they're working, I love the two I own and plan to buy more.
