Product arrived much faster than estimated. Good. It was easy to instal. Good. Heck, its only a water filter, what else is there to say except that it is very expensive and at 2 per year negates any savings I would make from my energy efficient appliance. Not so good.

Whirlpool/Kenmore Deluxe Water Filter (4396508-3pack) Review

These are the standard filters used in many refrigerators like my Whirlpool. They filter all the water used in the ice maker and the in-door water dispenser just as you would expect them to do.
The 3-pack of these is a great maoney saving costing only about $5 more than buying two of them individually.
They only rate about a 4 in the star system because they never last as long as Whirlpool says they should. The owner's manual says about 5-6 months with the sort of use we put them to, and the "change me" light comes on at about the 5 month time, and the water flow through begins to diminish about the same time. But, changing the filter at the 4-month point keeps the water taste top notch. Waiting that extra month or so gives you water that isn't as clean tasting.
Ah, well. At least you save money buying in bulk.

The Whirlpool Refrigerator Water Filter 4396508 is a new and improved filter that replaces the Whirlpool 4392857 Ice and Water filter. The 4396508 is certified to remove additional impurities... the 4392857 is no longer available. This filter fits most Whirlpool and Kenmore refrigerators where the filter is located in the base grille, and can be used in refrigerators with any of the following water filtration systems: WF-NL240V, NL240V, WF-L400V, L400V, WF-NL300, NL300, WF-L500, L500, WF-L400, L400, WF-NL240, NL240. It can also be used to replace any of the following part numbers which may be mentioned in your manual: Whirlpool 4392857 & Whirlpool 4396509. It does not fit fridges with recently introduced "push-button" style in-grill filters. It improves the taste and odor of the water and removes the following impurities: 99.0% of Chlorine, 95.1% of Particulates (Class II), 99.35% of Lead at pH 6.5, 99.31% of Lead at pH 8.5, 96.22% of Mercury at pH 6.5, 91.57% of Mercury at pH 8.5, 96.4% of Benzene, 99.77% of p-dichlorobenzene, 92.86% of Toxaphene, and 92.5% of Carborfuran. It Does Not Remove Flouride. Whirlpool recommends that you replace the filter every 6 months OR when the filter change indicator light comes on OR if the refrigerator has not been used for more than two weeks (for instance, during a move) OR if you notice a decrease in the flow of water or objectionable tastes in the water or ice.

Description leads one to believe these are higher-end filters and they're not. These are about $22.50 ea when you buy the 4. You can buy a single one here on Amazon at $16.35. They're sub-par and do not meet standard 53 which is the reduction of Lead, Mercury, Benzene, p-dichlorobenzene,Toxaphene and Carbofuran.
What does tested for standard 42 and 53 mean anyway? It does not say it passed the test. That's like saying we tested chicken for salmonella and not saying whether any was found.
Really disappointed with Amazon for allowing deceptive vendor marketing. I thought I did not have to be a lawyer buy a water filter: "Whirlpool Refrigerator Filter" is not a "Whirlpool Filter". Yeah, I know my fault but, they should say "Water Sentinel Filter for Whirlpool refrigerator" if they want my business. I guess they're counting on people not having enough time to read the lat detail and spend two hours before ordering a water filter and then, not sending the items back cause it takes even more time. Well, these are going back and Amazon will be getting less of my money and business going forward.
This is health related item but I guess the mighty dollar comes first.
I'm a big Amazon fan but lately, some of the vendors they have are making me think twice before I blindly order from Amazon with a few clicks on my cell phone like I normally do. Losing faith in Amazon fast.

AquaFresh Replacement Filter for Whirlpool 4396508 Review

AquaFresh Replacement Filter for Whirlpool 4396508

We purchased this filter (AquaFresh WF285) from another online retailer as a less expensive alternative to our Whirlpool brand filter. Bad choice.
Immediately after installing it we noticed it was producing lots of very tiny black particles of debris in the water, even though we had run the recommended 2 quarts of water through it. Long story short, over 30 minutes and 20 quarts of water later, the water was still filled with these very small carbon pieces, almost like black dust.
We removed it and put our Whirlpool brand filter back in, and within 4 quarts the debris started to go away, and after 6 quarts the water was running clean again.
So, we assumed that we must have simply received a defective filter. Not so.
We contacted the online retailer and they sent us a new one in exchange, and the new one gave us the same exact results. We ran gallon after gallon of water through it (thoroughly rinsing the jug between fills to make sure we weren't seeing lingering remnant debris), and still the second replacement WF285 kept producing water filled with black carbon dust.
However, you do need a keen eye to notice it so I'm guessing that's why we haven't found other negative reviews of the product yet. We believe it's likely that most people simply don't notice the carbon dust after a few quarts because it's so fine, and I'm willing to bet that a lot of people are drinking some carbon-dusty water right now because they've never taken a close look at their water after using this.
If you have this product, fill a white (or very light) colored bowl or juice jug with it and let it sit for a few seconds and watch it under good lighting. You will notice that as the water settles the carbon dust begins to rise to the top and swirl together, making it more visible for people with poor eyesight.
We've switched back to the actual Whirlpool brand and our fridge water is perfectly clean again. Too bad, we were really hoping to save some money because the Whirlpool filters are so much more expensive, but it's totally not worth drinking nasty water from poorly made filters to save a lousy 10 bucks. This experience has us back to buying filters direct from Whirlpool now at a premium. Major bummer.
