(More customer reviews)Sorry to say that in side by side testing with standard ice melt (available at any grocery or hardware store) - it does nothing and in fact freezes itself! I live in the Chicago area so this is not the permafrost of northern Canada. The temperature was 20 F. I tried to pretreat the sidewalk before a snow event of 2 inches and it did not prevent snow from accumulating as advertised. Then after shovelling - I sprayed the solution on some ice frozen to the sidewalk and instead of melting ice - I ended up with a new layer of ice. The rock salt - while not glamorous at least did what it was advertised to do and at a 90% savings. Let the buyer beware!

(More customer reviews)These mats are the only way to go. I tried using the buried heat lines in concrete when I poured my stoops but they only lasted a couple of years. So, I bought two mats, one standard size 6'x4', the other I had Heat Trak make custom for me 9'x4'. Both are 220/240 to work with my old sidewalk system. I am using the snow and temp sensor to turn the mats on and off during the snow season. I called heat Trak direct and talked with Rich at Ext230. He was great in helping me order the custom mat. These are not cheap mats!!! But the old saying "you get what you pay for" When winter here in Iowa is done, I will just roll these babies up and store them in the garage. They really do make life a little easier!!

(More customer reviews)I purchased this heated mat because my 87 year old Mom moved in and was also recoveing from a broken hip. the mat is great but there are problems. Once the ice and snow melts off, it freezes a band on the outer edge of the mat that is not heated. Another issue is that you need to go out and lift the mat to get off the melted snow and ice water or when you turn the mat off, it will re freeze. Despite its issues, we do love it because the first step out of the house is alway safe and then you can grab onto the railing . Everytime it snows we turn on the mat and then when melted we go out and lift it to get off the excess water and turn it off. I do recommened it but be aware of the issues related to it, hense the 4 stars.

(More customer reviews)I built a house in New England in 2000 and thought about heating the front steps and walkway, but decided against it (high building costs, energy costs too high). I regretted it since most winters rendered the front door useless due to ice buildup on the steps and walkway (well, it was at least dangerous). I tried using salt and that resulted in a $500 bill repairing the brick steps.
This winter (January 2011), after spending literally hours chiseling away 3-4 inches of ice by hand on the front steps, I found these HeatTrak stair mats (COMMERCIAL version) and decided to give them a try. To my pleasure, they completely eliminated the ice problem on the steps! This was one of the worst winters in New England.
I then decided to additionally purchase the RESIDENTIAL heated walkway mats, which connect to the COMMERCIAL stair treads. Just to note, the COMMERCIAL heated walkway mats do not connect the the COMMERCIAL stair treads (probably due to power consumption limitations) and require separate circuits.
Challenges: Sizing of electrical power becomes a calculation (15 amps vs 20 amps, 120 volts vs 240 volts, total watts, and GFCI trigger sensitivity). You might have to call HeatTrak support to get the right answers and even then you have to talk to the right guy (the first guy I talked to got it wrong). Also, the extender cords between stair treads could be a an inch or two longer. I'd attach a picture, but I am not sure how to do that.
Bottom line: Expensive, but worth it to me. They worked well this winter (hopefully they will last). Highly recommended.

(More customer reviews)We bought this item for our steep driveway, so that we can cut down on heavy shoveling during large snowstorms. It is enough to melt the snow to allow one side of your car tires to roll over and gain enough traction to get up the hill. The heat is barely noticeable. If you place a ball of snow on it it will not melt instantly but rather over 10-20 minutes. We keep this outdoors all winter and it is very sturdy. It is also very heavy to pull out from storage. If you are a petite person you will need another person to help you carry this out to the walk. For this winter we used it in front of our house to clear a walkway from the street to the front door. Melts snow perfectly and even dries a rim of concrete all around it. No more slipping on ice or slushing through snow!

These work pretty much as expected, with the following observations:
+ Easy To Install; connects to mats via a waterproof coupler
+ Heats Up Fast; was over 80 degrees Fahrenheit after fifteen minutes

The HeatTrak control unit allows you to hook up your HeatTrak walkway and stair mats to power your heated mats. Every group of stair mats and walkway mats requires a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) control unit to connect the system to an electrical outlet. The control unit contains a watertight connector that will allow it to connect to the first or last mat in your system. The control unit is rainproof, so it can be left outside for the entire winter season.If you do not buy a GFCI Control Unit, your mats will not work. Additionally, if you are ordering heated mats for more than one location (front and back of the house) you must order a control unit for each location. Each control unit can connect up to 5 walkway mat, 15 stair mats or a combination thereof, up to 15-amps. This unit has a cord length of 6 feet.

(More customer reviews)We bought two of the HeatTrak HR10-30 Safety Tread Mats and several HeatTrak HR20-60 Residential Snow & Ice Heated Walkway Mat, 20-Inch by 5-Foot, 120 Volt to make a snow and ice free path from my front porch to our driveway. These mats require HeatTrak HR-P Residential Snow & Ice Heated Stair Mat Control Unit With 6-Foot Power Cord (not included) to control up to fifteen of these (or a combination of both mat types). These work as hoped, but one of the two units I received was defective (replaced quickly by Amazon). Here are my observations:
Pros -
+ Easy To Install; units connect easily via waterproof couplers (see picture in "Customer Images")
+ Works Well; heated up to 80+ degrees Fahrenheit within 15 minutes
Cons -
- Ends Curl; unsecured ends curl up
We had sleet the day after getting these and the units made short work of melting the ice.

(More customer reviews)The HeatTrak does what it says; it stays warm all the time and snow and ice melt away.
There were two disappointments though. One is that Amazon's photo of the product shows an on-off switch positoned on the cord and you would think that you could leave the mat plugged in all the time, just switching it on/off as needed. The mat we received has no mid-cord control and must be turned on and off by stepping outside and unplugging or plugging it in. Big difference since our outlet is not convenient to use, and no good for energy savings, either. The other disappointment is that right out of the box, the Heat Trak smells very strongly of rubber and has continued to smell for 4 weeks. We get a whiff every time we open the door. Additionally, we got this so that our dog would have a warm dry spot to wait until we let her in. Instead, she avoids the mat and has never yet sat on it.
