Honeywell TN924W Weather Information Station, Black Review

(More customer reviews)This is the first complete weather station that offers the s.a.m.e noaa weather radio reports. This feature sounds fine and works once you set it up, but has some design flaws. You can not make the alarm part of the radio any softer although you can turn the alarm and voice off entirely if you wish to. However, they included a volume for the voice. The problem is that even the voice being set to the lowest level in my case is still too loud. The alarm also goes off whether you set it to voice mode or not so you either have to turn it off or keep them both on.
As far as th weather station goes it gives all the features of other weather stations minus the UV light. One other note is that they removed the remote that the previous version had and I am not sure what made them do this as all the buttons are in the back of the base unit so the remote would have made it easier to operate all the functions the weather station has to offer.
It took an hour or so to mount the outdoor instruments and they immeadiatly started communicating with the base unit and all seem accurate enough. I am however still wondering about the built in barometer as I have seen the barometer change too rapidly so I am not sure if this flaw exists in all the base units. Honeywell said that they are shipping another base unit so I will have to see if the same problem exists.
There are some other features like a sensor light that works well and the included simplistic software package for a USB connection to a computer so you can monitor the weather records.
It is still nice to see that the main selling point of this weather station being the weather radio in this case works if you can live with its flaws. Honeywell would have the perfect weather tool if they would redesign some things and fix other things with the weather station.

It is not at all intuitive as to how to change settings, and if you hit the wrong button when an alarm goes off, it puts you into reset mode and you have to reset everything. Temp changed reading from F to C and will not go back to read in Farenheit, and it often has false readings on the outside sensor, showing sun or partial sun with 98% humidity and rain going off. Overall, I rate this honeywell product as a lemon and would send it back if I had not thrown away the mandatory packaging and original info that came with it. Maybe honeywell needs to go back to made in USA for quality, instead of following suit with everyone who is getting their products made in China.I would gladly pay more for something if it was user friendly and it worked! This thing is junk and I will be looking for a replacement.

(More customer reviews)I purchased this item with a little sceptisism after reading a lot of reviews of other brand stations having issues with signal loss through walls to base station etc.I turned on the unit followed instructions.The wind gauge is about 30 feet up 20 feet from house the uv sensor is mounted 10 feet up as well as rain gauge.All sensors Detect and transmit flawlessly.I really like the product and I am impressed with the quality.All the outside sensors have o ring seals and have a tight fit to prevent moisture.I installed energizer lithium batteries for maximum temp range as specified in manual.Instruction manual states the outside sensors last apprx 2 years on one set of good batteries not bad.

(More customer reviews)Difficult to program. Remote temperature/humidity sensor had to be within 30 feet of base otherwise had to constantly re-set to "find" signal. Wind speed virtually useless as it reads an average over a ten minute time frame. Gusts reading seemed off by 15 to 40%, as well.
One needs altitude and latitude and longitude in order to get accurate info from some of the features.
Weather prediction surprisingly accurate.

I followed the "Quick Start Guide" and I ran into a couple issues...
First off, I had to get my altitude from my GPS unit, but I am sure there is some info off the internet that should get you close.
Secondly the dang Time Zone issue. I tried and tried and tried, and finally after several attempts I got it. The key to changing your time zone is make sure the Day is displayed next the time SA for example. Then holding the ^ UP button allows you to change your time zone. Intially I had the seconds next to the time and it would not allow me to change the time zone.
Hope this helps someone out there and saves them the 30 minutes of my life I wont get back ;)

(More customer reviews)I was initially delighted with this product when I bought it six months ago. It looks very nice and functions well. The display is easy to read. The alarms work (though as another reviewer noted you don't get two alarms per day). The gentle back illumination works nicely to let you read the display at night. I haven't paid much attention to the weather display except for the temperature and humidity functions, so I won't comment on those. But I have a few comments worth recording.
First, the unit has two parts. The remote temperature/humidity sensor unit that you hang outdoors isn't shown in the product picture on Amazon. It's about half the size of a pack of cigarettes and it has its own small temperature/humidity display. This unit requires two AAA batteries. If the temperature outside will ever drop below freezing, even for just an hour or two, these must be expensive lithium batteries (8 Energizer Lithium AAA 1.5V High Energy Lithium e2 Battery. 2 X Card 4AAA for example). That's because normal alkaline and titanium batteries deliver less voltage at low temperature, whereas lithium batteries give much more uniform voltage output down to about -40 degrees. If the voltage supply to the outdoor sensor drops too much, it will lose synchronization with the indoor unit and you'll have to "connect" them again.
That brings me to why I think this device is too complicated. When the device is new, or whenever the outdoor unit loses its radio connection to the indoor unit, the two units must negotiate which radio channel they will use to communicate. That's a useful process, because it allows them to choose a radio frequency that has minimal interference from other nearby devices. However, the process for doing it is maddening complex. You must remove the batteries from both units, then insert the batteries in the remote unit, then use an unbent paper clip to press the reset switch on the outdoor unit, then bring the units close together and insert the batteries in the indoor unit. After a minute or so they negotiate a frequency and the temperature of the outdoor unit is displayed on the indoor unit. You can then move them apart.
But you're not done. Having removed the batteries from the indoor unit, you must reset the date, choose a time zone and a bunch of other settings, using a combination of button pushes that is too complex to remember: I printed it out in very small type and taped it to the back of the device so I would not have to find the instruction book each time.
Finally, the atomic clock, like all such devices, synchronizes to the broadcast signal from NIST during the early morning hours, typically midnight to 5 AM local time. That time is chosen because the radio signal is much easier to receive at night. To get my unit to synchronize I had to put it on a window sill; it could not receive a strong enough signal from my night stand. That requirement is typical for so-called "atomic" clocks and watches. Fortunately it only needs to synchronize once a month or so to keep good time.
All in all, I'm glad I bought this remote thermometer, and I'm willing to live with the restrictions noted above. But you should be aware before you buy that this is not a "set it and forget it" device.

(More customer reviews)The weather around here has gotten colder, and out of curiosity I've always wanted to know how cold it was outside at any given moment. It helps especially when I'm getting dressed so I know how much I have to bundle (in the winter).
I got the TE242 as a gift. After looking at the picture on the packaging, the device is deceptively larger than I would imagine. With nothing to compare it to, I imagined it to be very compact and small. It's larger, about the height and thickness of a paperback book. The styling is nice, and the readout is decently-sized and very legible.
The device shows the outside temperature, the inside temperature, the time, and the date. It comes with a smaller remote temperature probe about the size of an altoids tin that you put outside. I hung mine up by the outside door. It receives this signal wirelessly, and also syncs the time up with the US atomic clock for accurate time. I had to set the timezone on mine (press mode until the date abbreviation is next to the time, hold up till the timezone changes).
The only problem I've had is that the unit sometimes loses the signal from the remote temp sensor, which means the outside temperature is blank. Holding up for a few seconds makes the unit search and find the signal again. A minor inconvenience, but annoying. However, it may have been due to interference since I haven't had any signal loss since moving. The remote temp sensor may have a channel selector that would help, I haven't looked at it in a while.
The main Honeywell site is hard to navigate, but finally I found the site for these devices: [...] I was able to find the manual there.
I do wish it had a humidity feature and that it didn't lose signal, but overall I'm pleased with the device. I might shop around next time, but I like this one.

(More customer reviews)This unit is easy to read and works great--compared to what, I dunno. We've never owned anything like this. But it's fun to have, much more so than a simple thermometer.Two caveats however. You need a very small flat-head screwdriver in order to put the AAA batteries into the sensor. Not so small as the one in an eyeglass repair kit though. I had a small screwdriver with a shirt-pocket clip, that small, and still had to file the sides down in order to reach the deeply recessed screws. I'll have to do this anytime the batteries need changing. Not the best design perhaps.Second, the instructions tell you to put the (outdoor) sensor (1) in a sight line with the (indoor) monitor-- (2) open to the sky-- (3) out of the sun-- (4) out of the rain-- (5) away from metal-- It's not easy to do all of this! Ours is nestled in a plastic container cut up into the shape of a bus kiosk and tied to a post. I'm not sure if it's all 100% necessary.The atomic clock took about a day to find its signal. The instructions warn about this odd (to me) likelihood.It's a little discouraging to have to deal with all of this out of the box but as I say the device is great.
