Nostalgia MSB-585 Margarator 1-Gallon Margarita-Making Machine Review

My husband had purchased the Margarator for me during the winter in preparation for opening the pool in the spring. I am the person that is in charge of refreshments whenever we entertain and he thought this would be helpful in saving me trips back and forth to the kitchen because it is so large and self storing.

I have now UNSUCCESSFULLY used the item 3 times and have disappointed over a dozen guests that were hoping for a refreshing slushy drink by the pool. After my first unsuccessful attempt, I had my husband read the directions that I had read. He set up the machine the same way that I did, filling the ice to the Max line, adding the 2.5 cups of Tequila mix and the bottle of margarita mix. We even pre-crushed the ice cubes to try and help it out. Again, after 12 minutes of letting it run, it produced 1/2 cup of slush that would come out of the nozzle and the rest was trapped inside with large pieces of ice.

So the third time we chopped up the ice more, added extra fluid to try and help it AND shut if off and stirred with a wooden spoon occasionally. Same results as the previous 2 times. So we yet again scoop out the ice chunks, jam a straw into it and hand it to our disappointed guests.

Because he bought this in the winter, I can no longer return it to the store that he ordered it from. Do we have the receipt - NO. I am willing to pay to ship this back to the Hellman Group - NO. We have wasted enough money on mixes and alcohol alone.

I am EXTREMELY annoyed and disappointed with the malfunction of this product, as are all my parched guests. Am I willing to try it yet again? Thats what the Hellma Group asked me to do after I contacted them. They suggest that I try it with pepsi, full of ice with 1/2 the liquid mix..let it run for 5-8 minutes then add the rest of the mix.
Guess what...it did not work. The margartor will take its place next to the garbage can in its original box for all to see as they drive by this weekend.

This is a beautiful design. The top little cap is rubber coated inside and the main cap and body match up perfectly so no leaks at all.
Perfect size; not too small, not too big.
I've been mixing margaritas every day since it arrived 4 days ago.
Since I haven't had it long, I can't comment about its longevity, but this appears solidly build.

I waited a day to see if the others were being shipped separately and then called the company. They made an error and after talking to the product manager, he sent out the rest of the set. (More customer reviews)This product has a purpose. I do think that it looks a little "cheap". It almost looks as if the "chrome" color is about to peel off. You can see areas on the product that are bent/dent, I am thinking it might be a chrome "sticker" type product on the outside. I received this as a gift, otherwise I would have returned it as I don't think it would be worth the price. I am also concerened about cleaning this item after use as it looks like it coudl easily scratch/peel. However it is a great way to quickly separate salt/sugar/lime.

One of my friends commented "Isn't that just a glorified blender?" I could explain that it not only made a larger batch, the spigot made it very handy to serve, and it was insulated so it kept the drinks cold and icy. We have enjoyed several different kinds of drinks. It did take trial and error to figure out that if it had sat for a while after mixing, we needed to turn it back on and let it run before serving ourselves for the perfect drink.

Although I haven't really used other shakers extensively, I've tried, and don't like, the 3 part kind. This one is cheap, and easy to use. The seal is good; no need for a rubber edge on the glass. What more do you need? It was remarked in the review of another Boston shaker that the drink recipes on the glass obscure the measurement scale. Not really. This glass has both oz. and mls. I find that the recipes are a good reminder of classic combos, good departure points for creative mixing. (I don't like full strength cocktails, and usually dilute the alcohol 1:2 with fresh squeezed fruit or vegetable juices.)

(More customer reviews)Ok, so like almost everyone who is reading this review...my first thought was "Why am I going to pay THAT kind of money for a hyped up blender!" I can sum it up in two words...snowball fight!
Seriously though, I took the plunge and am not upset that I did. This makes a great addition to any party, whether it's a couple of friends, or a crowd. And nobody's walking around chewing on ice chips from their blender drinks! My kids love the shaved ice to play with, and it makes great snowcones/slushies.
Setup is easy, cleanup is easy (seriously), the only problem that I have found so far is creating the right recipes for the drinks. It comes with some standards...but I like to play!
Originally, my wife wanted to get a professional maker, but we found they were thousands of dollars. After buying the DM3000, we could care less about the profession model anymore...this one makes 3 different drinks in a cycle, is fun to watch, and easier to maintain! It is quick and effortless, especially if you pre-mix your drink ingredients and have them on standby.
In my opinion, if you have the extra money to spare, and you like to have friends over or have kids, this is a great product!

Margaritaville DM2000 Premium Frozen Concoction Maker Review

I purchased this item as I was tired of low quality drink mixers... I purchased the FIJI as it was the newest model out. It has a larger Ice holder and different settings for margaritas, daquiries, mudslides, and smoothies.
The machine is powerful and seemingly high quality. I feel it will last a long time. It does take some practice getting your recipies correct. Maybe its just me, but I also can NOT differentiate the drinks from the four different settings. A drink in the mudslide setting has the same texture as a Margarita....and etc. So I felt that was a waste for me. With the larger Ice Hopper thats nice, but easily available for the Key West version. I would rather have extra blending Jars as they are small and what I go through the most. The Key west seems to have the best matching ice reservoir for the blending jar. The drip through water catcher is nice... but very difficultt to clean. Its too narrow to wash by hand, you need to use a long handled something(minor inconvenience I guess).
Performance is nice. Its powerful and the ice shaver works well. very well actually/ But that too is extremely difficult to clean... If it comes out to clean, I cant figure mine out...so its pretty much just sticking a cloth it there to swap up melted ice, and hand pick out leftover ice. Its tricky as supports and the big blade can get you.
Also, probably the most fustrating thing is the ice hopper does not line up nicely with the blending jar opening. Its off about a 1/4 inch, but just enough for liquid to jump out when machine fires up. I was told I had too much liquid, but it does it no matter how much liquid I have in it. I now have to put the lid on the mixing jar at an angle so it lines up with the hopper, but this leaves an imperfect seal on the jar, and for full serving mixes it wants to come out the side of the lid.
Its also a big unit. We dont store appliances on our counter(actually wont fit under the counter wit the ice hopper on it), and we were limited as to where this unit would fit in our pantry... but thats fine, we made room. When mixing, the ice only feature is nice as you can really make a nice slushy drink for yourself or the kids if you wish. I pretty much only use the ice only and blend only buttons now, as the programmed settings either dont add enough ice for our taste or mixes it up too much. The no spill blending jar is not really no spill. It has a spout, but the glass is thick(quality), and that leads to dripping down the side when pouring. I would like to see them invent a high quality blending jar with a spout for pouring(as seen on cheap blenders)... now that would be the last great feature they would need to add.
I wish I had gotten the Key West to save money, but live and learn. Its a solid, decent looking machine that seems durable for years of use. I can live with its shortcomings operationally, but everytime I make a drink I cant get past the fact the blending jar does not line up perfectly with the ice hopper. I called the Manufacturer and they told me it in fact doesnt line up....That would be my clue to fix that, or not put it on the market at nearly $400.
Worth $400...NO...$300...NO... $200...sure, because of its powerful motor and expected lifespan. If you dont use it often its not worth it. The lower priced version at less than $200 would be perfect. But when using this often, you can justify a larger price. What else is out there like it anyhow???

(More customer reviews)I think what makes a 5-star strainer is one that's designed intelligently. Some strainers don't have tabs to keep it on top of the shaker, some have not enough holes, some have long handles (for some reason), some are flimsy, some have springs that stretch, some have cavities in the handle for water to sit... This strainer is the one to own and use. Ergonomic, thick metal, raised lip, smart design, dishwasher safe. Not snug in the metal half of my strainer, but doesn't need to be (it is snug in the glass half, if you prefer to pour from the glass). VERY hard to find in stores, I looked for a WHILE and could not fine ONE so I bought on Amazon and saved money off the retail price anyway. Oxo products are smart, cheap and stylish.

(More customer reviews)I distinctly remember making fun of the Margaritaville Frozen Concoction Maker when I first saw it advertised in the Front Gate catalog. ("Who's going to buy a three hundred dollar blender on steroids?!? Hah-hah-hah...") Imagine my horror when my wife announced that she wanted one for her birthday. Looks like that "who" was going to be "me".
The vast majority of positive reviews on Amazon calmed my fears a bit and I ordered one up. As usual, Amazon delivered quickly and it was unpacked and setup in a couple minutes.
Exactly true to its claims, the thing actually makes perfect consistency margaritas and any other frozen drinks you can think of. I think I like it more than my wife. It has a "power tool" vibe to it that guys appreciate. Spinning blades and high speed motors. What could possibly go wrong?
There's a few things/tips to be aware of:
1) It's BIG. It just barely clears the front of our kitchen cabinets and is too tall to go under them. Pretty heavy to lift onto a high shelf too.
2) It does a more consistent job making a "full" pitcher than just a single drink. Having a lot of ice in the hopper works best; putting a single glass full of ice in will be too watery if you use the automatic cycle. To compensate, for a single drink I manually hold the "shave" switch on for ~4-5 seconds prior to starting the automatic mix cycle. Works great.
3) The shaved ice melts faster than cubes when it touches glass, so I've taken to icing the pitcher to keep the glass cool (or at least filling it with cold water for a few seconds) before adding the liquid ingredients. Unlike plastic pitchers on commercial drink makers, the glass (thick glass at that) can transfer a lot of heat. Popping it straight out of a hot dishwasher onto the stand will give you a mighty runny margarita.
4) Although "dishwasher safe" the lid to our pitcher turned a funny mottled brown/green color after one cycle in the wash. Not sure if it was the heat or the detergent or what, but after that it was slightly brittle and generally "weird". A call to the 800 customer service number yielded a free replacement which we just hand wash now.
All in all, it works as advertised and is a real crowd pleaser at parties. A good gizmo.

After vacillating for months over all the posted complaints about this or that manual or electric ice-crushing machine, I chose this lowest-cost option. Now *moi* can make my fave cocktail -- a "perfect Manhattan, straight up" -- to rival the best I've bought! (It depends, incisively, on having slurried -- not shaved -- ice in the shaker. Then the chilling & subtle dilution is so effective as to render vermouths as disparate as Noilly Prat and Doulin similar -- only Cinzano makes a difference, for the worse.) As anyone into cocktails already should have an Osterizer, adding this to one's gear is a no-brainer. And, yes, the Osterizer's OEM blade really isn't capable of processing ice.
