worked great, lasted ~6 months ( I started tasting bad water again in about 5 months but I figured I'd wait until the indicator light on my fridge came on), water tastes much better with a fresh filter.

The Frigidaire WFCB PureSourcePlus Refrigerator water filter fits most Frigidaire refrigerators made before 2001. It replaces frigidaire part numbers 5303917752, RF-200, RC200, RC-200, RC-101, and Sears Kenmore part number 46-9906, used in Kenmore refrigerators that are made by Frigidaire (model numbers starting with 253). Most refrigerators with this water filter have a sliding month marker built into the fridge above the filter housing. The PureSourcePlus filter cartridge itself has white ends, like the one pictured. It improves the taste and odor of the water and removes the following impurities: 99.99% of Cysts, 99.80% of Particulates (Class I), 99.70% of Turbidity, 99.30% of Lead, 97.80% of Chlorine (Class I), 94.2% of 2,4-D (a herbicide), 94.9% of Atrazine (a herbicide), and 87.5% of Toxaphene (a pesticide). It Does Not Remove Flouride. Frigidaire recommends that you replace the filter every 6 months OR if the refrigerator has not been used for more than two weeks (for instance, during a move) OR if you notice a decrease in the flow of water or objectionable tastes in the water or ice.

EDITED to add comments after 6 months of use:
People continue to curse at the stupid design of the water dispenser, and continue to spill water all over the place. Reducing the star rating from original 3 stars to 2. I would NOT recommend this unit, especially for the asking price. If you can find one on clearance, maybe, but again, there is NOTHING special about this that qualifies it to be priced above $1K imo.
ONE year warranty people...that should tell you something right there.
**********
Replaced a GE fridge with this model:
Due to my space limitations, I narrowed it down to the similar Kitchenaid model (kind of wish I had gone for this), and the Whirlpool at the same level. Bought online sight unseen fwiw.
Honestly, I don't see why the "PROFESSIONAL" designation on this. Nothing about the quality makes me think it's anything other than a very average refrigerator. Cheap, plastic bins just like every other average unit I have seen.
PROS:
- Best thing about this is the good looking AND practical stainless steel finish. It's great really - NO smudging (except on the handles) AND it's magnetic (something rare in SS models).
- "theater" lighting...when you open the doors at night, supposedly it doesn't blind you immediately, but rather gradually, as the lights ramp up
- Has a changeable air filter. I like this...no more arm and hammer boxes taking up space and tipping over. OTOH, another filter to replace.
- External, digital temp controls for both sides. I like the idea of this...but in reality, how often are you going to be changing the temperature? If you have to change it a lot, maybe there is a problem with the thermostat?
- this is a small thing, but I really like that some of the side compartments in the fridge have a non slip surface. Very nice touch. Instead of your jars of jelly sliding around and clanking into each other (except when the door closes, see below), things stay nicely in place.CONS:
- OMG THE DOOR SLAM. This one kills me, and for such a small thing, makes such a big negative impression because it's EVERY time you deal with the fridge. When you close the door, there is NO "cushion" for lack of a better or more technical word. On my very low end GE (and most every fridge out there for that matter), there is a built in governor I guess that slows the speed of the door so it doesn't just slam closed. I think what happens is that the resistance is just greater as you approach the closed position. Whatever that feature is, WP for some reason decided to leave it out on this fridge (maybe none of theirs have this, no idea). It is sooo annoying. We have gotten used to it more or less, and most of the time we carefully and slowly close the door so it doesn't rattle the whole kitchen. But anybody else (who of course is also used to the normal, slower fridge door behavior) closing the fridge door is always startled and usually jumps when the door SLAMS shut with a huge rattle. This is just piss poor design imo, and is a big negative. I am sure we will eventually get used to it, but shouldn't have to.
- another horrible, non standard design implementation re: water dispener. Unless you have an extremely wide cup (think wide coffee mug or even soup bowl/mug, you can't just push your glass into the unit expecting water to hit. Nooooo. Because of the design, any normal rim sized glass will be overshot by the water squirter, so you have to wrap your hand around the glass and then insert, to make up for the space. Never seen another fridge with this problem, and like the door slam issue, because it's so unusual, every time someone not living in our house goes for water, they end up getting it all over them and the floor. That tells you right there it's not just me being picky. I swear they designed the thing and never actually tested it in a real live situation. Inexcusable imo.
Because these two things have relatively easy workarounds, I am not going to go into below average territory. I doubt there is a perfect fridge out there, but I do wish I had gone for the Kitchenaid. I wonder if their engineers made similar mistakes.
3 stars, barely, and that is assuming that this unit will last many years w/o probs.
IMO, look at the Kitchenaid before buying this one.

Maytag 8212652 PuriClean IV Refrigerator Water Filter Review

Maytag 8212652 PuriClean IV Refrigerator Water Filter

I recently purchased the Puriclean IV at Home Depot.
I tested this water filter using a TDS meter which measures total dissolved solids in water.
Results:
Tap Water = 367 PPM (parts per million)
Puriclean IV = 370 PPM
As you can see, the Puriclean IV produced no difference in water quality based on my TDS meter.
This is a very simple filter that uses charcoal to reduce odor. Charcoal does not filter out harmful solids, they just pass right through the filter.

GE SmartWater Refrigerator Water Filter GXRLQR Home Improvement Review

GE SmartWater Refrigerator Water Filter GXRLQR Home Improvement
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This filter seems to work well & has improved the water quality of some very iron tasting water. We have it installed on the water line that supplies the drinking water faucet & refrigerator ice maker. We put it in the basement so it's easy to access/change the filter.
Update 12/09: We also use this filter in our primary home for the water line supplying the refrigerator. This house has a very different water issue: hard water. We previously used a Brita filter/pitcher for making coffee/tea because it stopped hard water deposits from forming in our pot. But that system was so slow & took space in the refrigerator so we switched to this filter. Unfortunately, it does not remove the hard water/lime. So the pot has to be "delimed" regularly. Also doesn't stop the buildup of lime in the refrigerator ice maker/water dispenser.
Was not happy w/the way this was packaged for shipping. There was no filler around the filter boxes (c'mon, who doesn't have a little newspaper or something around to use in packing???). So the filters rattled around the box & 2 (of 3) were out of the product packaging. Luckily, it doesn't appear that they were damaged but will consider another company to order these from next time.

These GE part numbers can be pretty confusing, but here's a tip... the ""R"" at the end of the part number means ""replacement"" - so the GXRLQR is the replacement filter for the GXRLQ filter system.

The bin itself is fine, and the price is reasonabe. Seller shipped quickly and appropriately packaged. Arrived without incident. Only problem is that it is hard to tell from the picture which of the four different types of door bins used by my Frigidaire refrigerator this is. This is the UPPER refrigerator door bin, not the Lower one. It cannot be used in several of the positions on the right hand door, nor can it be used in the freezer. This is a design flaw in the refrigerator, and a problem with the documentation of the unit, (the parts section of the user guide does not identify these as different parts) and no fault of the seller.

Compact III 5 Stage Review

Compact III 5 Stage
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this for the office to use instead of bottled water. I have one at home (different manuf. but almost same setup) so I know I like the water much better than the tap, or even most bottled water. The installation instructions were a bit skimpy, but if you've done pumbing before and understand the idea of how the 6 filters of this RO systen works, it will not be a problem for you. I actually have an additional whole house filter and water softener, at the water main, before the water gets to my RO system.
In case you don't know the sequence of filtration, here it is: First, the water goes through 3 pre-filters (the clear tubes you see in the picture), then through the Reverse Osmosis filter membrane (above the pre-filters), then through an optional post-filter (to remove any remaining desolved solids), then finally through an activated Charcol filter (to remove any remaining taste/odors in the water), before it is stored in the tank. The tank pressure is very good. It will fill your glass of water in 5-10 sec. (about 2-3 times longer than tap water at full).
I was very surprised how fast this one makes water (a full tank in about 2 hours). Mine at home takes at least 4 times as long. Beware that this system does not include a dispensing faucet, but I got one from the same company with a phone call. I was surprised that the faucet was not included, but they explained that many of their customers use this system to filter water for their fish tank. Ah Hah!
One last thing, almost all RO systems waste a lot of water. Like around 7 gallon for each gallon you actually filter and store. Now that sounds like a lot, but think about how many gallons you actually will use daily, and then you will realize you waste more just flushing the toilet every day! Maybe you will be clever enough to store the post-filter water in a holding tank and use it for watering, washing, cleaning, etc. This water is not dirty water, it just has a higher concentration of desolved solids.

Aquasana AQ-4500 Complete Under Counter Water Filter System Review

Aquasana AQ-4500 Complete Under Counter Water Filter System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
PROS: 1. The water tastes great. 2. The stem threads into the base, but is double gasketed with O rings. This means that you don't have to tighten it down, and you can rotate it to any position and it won't leak from the base of the stem, as long as you don't unscrew it all the way. It also means you can point the handle in any direction you like, not just the one shown in the picture. 3. The faucet handle can be held down or flipped up and released to pour water. You don't have to hold it if you flip it up. 4. Installation was as easy as plumbing can be. If the supplied T fitting fits what you have under your sink, then you will be fine. If it does not fit, and you do not know what to do to make it fit, CALL A PLUMBER. This is what they do, and it won't cost you much, because it's an easy job.
CONS: The water keeps running after you shut it off. This is not a malfunction, it is a design flaw. The instructions even make reference to it. Considering the cost of this item, I feel this is a major drawback. I am not impressed. This bothers me every time I use it.
NEUTRAL: 1. Water does not come out cold. It sits in the filters at room temperature, so you'd have to run it for a LONG time before it would be the same temp as the water coming out of your cold water tap. It must be refrigerated if you want it cold. This is fine. Just fill a pitcher, not a glass. 2. Water runs very slow. Filling a pitcher, or a coffee pot takes a while. 3. The reason the filter faucet runs on is because the valve in the handle turns water on and off to the inlet of the filter, not to the faucet itself. I can only assume this is done so that the filtration system itself does not need to handle any real pressure. This would make it less expensive to manufacture, but like i indicated above it also means that the water runs for 5-10 seconds after you shut it off, as water pressure bleeds off, and residual water siphons out.
HOMEOWNER TIP: If you do call a plumber to install your water filter, whether it's this one or not, ask him to replace your shut off valves with 1/4 turn "ball valves" if they are not ball valves already. He'll explain why it's a good idea, and why this is a good time to do it. He'll also think you're an educated homeowner, which is in your favor.

I got one of these units for Christmas from my wife. And after about 1.5 months of use we couldn't be happier. This unit reduced our PPM's from 600 to 80. Our Arrowhead bottled water came in at 150-ppm's. The water tastes great and the system works like a charm!
The permeate pump is definitely the ticket. The pressure coming out of the RO tap is excellent and the recharging of the system is very rapid. It does make a clicking or thumping sound when the permeate pump is recharging the system. I'd rather it was quiet, however after doing quite a bit of research I feel the permeate pump is the best overall solution to increasing the out-flowing water pressure, as well as, permitting the membrane to function optimally.
Note: I had some shipping damage to the unit, but the supplier included so many extra fittings and such that I was able to fix the damaged parts myself and get the system up and running without having to wait for parts to be sent.
Stop buying bottled water and get one of these units now! You will not be sorry. Seriously, you will wonder why you've been buying bottled water all this time. You'll never want to pay for bottled water again once you taste this water and realize it's now costing you a few penny's per gallon to produce.

GE GXRTDR Inline Water Filter Replacement
Average Reviews:

My wife bought the GXRTDR in-line water filter because the GXRTQR filter was no longer available and the box said it would work as a replacement. As far as I can tell, it will only work if your old tubing is 1/4 in. Mine is 1/2 in. There were adapter fittings for the GXRTQR so I never had any problem with replacing it. I tried to do an install, thinking that the stub of a tube inside the fitting would marry, but it was too short, so I had to put the old filter back on. I have to either replace the tubes on fridge & at the faucet, or find another filter.

The Culligan 2650 was easy to install; I installed it within 20 minutes, provided the hole on my sink was already there for the faucet. The instructions walked me through everything, even have detailed instructions via pictures for the lazy reader. Comes with an ergonomic long reach faucet. The new design on the lead free faucet looks almost like the ones they have in Lowe's for $50. Filter unit warnes user with audible beeps and LED lights to indicate when filter needs changing (uses a 9V battery, included). So far, this is the only unit that I know that removes MTBE's, VOC's, and more at a low cost of $32 per filter cartridge replacement set (500 gallon filter life, Pentek brand name at filterpros.com). I avoided Lowe's and Home Depot water filters b/c they use proprietary filters, forcing consumer to buy expensive filter cartridges. All other pressure fed water filters I know use $40+ filter cartridges (i.e. Aquasana). I switched to the under sink filter b/c my Pur faucet head filter keeps leaking, and I got sick of replacing them after the third time. I get filtered water at less than $0.07/gal, and I get great tasting water in an instant; it fits my needs perfectly.

WV8046 Refrigerator Water Valve for Whirlpool 4318046 Review

WV8046 Refrigerator Water Valve for Whirlpool 4318046
Average Reviews:

17 year old KitchenAid side-by-side. Noticed water on floor, and ice maker not working. Searched web, diagnosed problem, as probably the "water dual valve". New fridge - big bucks. Called repair service - big bucks for old fridge. Answer, fix it myself, nothing to lose! Priced part at dealer - $60. Went on Amazon, found part for small bucks. Shipped fast. Instructions clear, thorough, but print too small, installation went well. Runs like new for $22.
One helpful hint. When this valve stops working, the ice maker water supply will often freeze. When you start up the unit after installing the new valve the ice maker may not work. If this occurs remove the ice collector, reach in, pull out the tube that delivers the water and melt the ice in it. Also if you have a hair blow dryer, heat the connector where the tube connects thru the back of the fridge, it may be frozen solid. I did this and it did the trick, runs like new.
Not bad for a 67 year old retired guy.

For an aspiring indoor hydroponic vegetable gardener like Your Humble Narrator, a source of clean water is essential. Here in suburban Salt Lake City, we are blessed with some of the dirtiest water in the country. Using this meter: pH-EC-TDS Meter my tap water clocks in with a pH of 8.2-8.4 and TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) reading of 300-350 ppm (parts per million). This review specifically addresses the suitability of the Watts WP5-50 reverse osmosis system to the task of providing a water supply for the home hydroponic gardener.
I've used other filtration devices, like straight carbon filters, and have been disappointed. Yes, they do remove sediment and some contaminants, however the drinking water never genuinely tasted "clean". Moreover, taking the testing meter to this water, and the TDS reading never went below 280 ppm which is unacceptable for hydroponic growing. After doing some research, I concluded that the only option was reverse osmosis.
Package Inspection
Out of the box everything looked okay with the exception of the faucet, which, as other reviewers have noted, is a cheaper version of the displayed product.
Installation
Installation was straightforward. The instructions, while not written by an English professor were sufficient albeit vague in a few critical places. I had the unit installed within two hours.
Waste Water, Output Water Quality and Quantity
My three biggest concerns with this product are output water quality, output water quantity and waste water production. Bear in mind that all of these are dependent upon the quality and pressure of your incoming water supply, which can change from season to season as well as from one time of day to another. Take a certain degree of comfort in knowing that my incoming water is probably worse than yours.
I have not yet connected the waste water tube to the sink's drain. Rather, the waste water tube is currently draining into an 18-gallon bucket so I can take measurements for the purposes of this review. To leave this setup in this manner is a code violation. I suggest that you connect your unit properly.
The amount of waste water this unit produces is staggering. For each gallon of clean water, I produce an additional 6.5 gallons of waste water. I have come to understand that I will experience a similar ratio regardless of the reverse osmosis unit I use. This phenomenon is a consequence of RO technology in general rather than a peculiarity of this particular unit. As I've suggested, the amount of waste water produced is proportional to how contaminated your incoming water supply is.
The output water quality is excellent. TDS (total dissolved solids) are 15-20 ppm, which is ideal for hydroponic growing. Any purer than that brings you into the realm of distilled water, which would need to be supplemented with minerals to be suitable for hydroponic use. Output water quantity is sufficient although disappointing. It produces one gallon in about 90 minutes. Higher water pressure and cleaner incoming water will decrease this time. The storage tank, although it has a physical capacity of three gallons, drains to empty after drawing two gallons. I consider this is a consequence of the technology, not a case of misleading advertising.
Summary
The Watts WP5-50 reverse osmosis water treatment system is well suited to the task of providing contaminant-reduced water for the purposes of hydroponic growing. It produces clean water in sufficient quantity for the purposes of a home hydroponic garden. Insofar as the waste water is concerned, for the time being, I'm leaving the waste tube in that eighteen gallon bucket. I'm using that water for my lawn.
June 20, 2009 - Important Update
Several weeks ago, our city's water changed for the worse. I'm assuming that it's because of a switchover to summertime procedures where water consumption is considerably heavier. Incoming water is now 800-900 ppm of Total Dissolved Solids. The unit's output water quality is 80-100 ppm which is still in the "good" range. It now produces roughly twelve gallons of waste water for each gallon of clean water is generates. The lesson here is that water quality can dramatically change from one season to another, as well as from one time of day to another.

The Watts Premier Five-Stage Reverse Osmosis Water Filtration Device is the most complete water filtration system available on the market. Featuring a five-stage filtration process, the RO incorporates sediment, coconut-shell carbon, and reverse osmosis technologies to provide great-tasting, bottled-quality water straight from your tap.
Five-Stage Filtration Removes ContaminantsThe Watts RO filters in five stages to ensure that your drinking water is as healthy and clean as possible. Once the system is connected, water passes through a 5-micron sediment filter that traps particulate matter--such as dirt, rust, and silt--that can affect the taste and appearance of your water. Next, a 5-micron carbon block filter reduces chlorine taste and odor, as well as other materials that can give water a bad taste. For the third stage, another 5-micron carbon block filter further reduces chlorine, as well as difficult-to-remove chloramines.
Reverse Osmosis for High-Quality Drinking WaterThe system's fourth stage of filtration is especially important, as it involves the passage of water through the reverse osmosis (RO) membrane. This semi-permeable membrane effectively removes arsenic, lead, perchlorate, chromium, copper, TDS (total dissolved solids), sodium, and a long list of other water contaminants. It also removes parasytic cysts, such as giardia and cryptosporidia.
The fifth stage of filtration utilizes a high quality GAC filter, which works as a final polishing filter when the water leaves the storage tank on its way up to your faucet. The end result is consistently great-tasting water at just pennies per gallon.
The Importance of Drinking Clean WaterWater is critical to proper food digestion, kidney health, brain function, blood health, joint functionality, and more. It's important to make sure that the water you drink is devoid of contaminants. Thankfully, using a Watts water filtration device will ensure consistent quality for all of your drinking and cooking needs. In fact, when you use Watts' high-quality certified water treatment devices and filters, your water will be free of chlorine taste and odors, particles, and many other contaminants that can be detrimental to your health.
*Please refer to the Performance Data Sheet for the complete list of claims for which this system is certified.
An Eco-Friendly ChoiceNot only is the RO filter a healthy choice for you, but it's also a healthy choice for the environment. This filter helps you minimize the harmful environmental consequences of buying bottled water. Incredibly, if a mere ten percent of North America's bottled water intake were reduced by switching to home-filtered water in reusable containers, we could eliminate:
Depending upon which Watts water-filtration product you use, you can prevent up to 16,000 half-liter bottles from being deposited in landfills--all in the time it takes to use and replace a single filter.
The Watts Premier Five Stage Reverse Osmosis Water Filtration Device is backed by a three-year limited warranty.
