Waring RB75 Pro Professional RPM Blender Review

Waring blenders -- and KitchenAid mixers -- used to last a lifetime. But, in the same way that KitchenAid is not what it was before being sold to Whirlpool, Waring is not what it was since being sold to ConAir (yes, ConAir, the hairdryer people).
The RB75 is a great-looking blender. Very retro. Very Flash Gordon. And the motor seems to be as good as Waring's ever were. Unfortunately, the blade assembly design is bizarre, to say the least, and what is not metal soon disintegrates (six weeks for me, a couple of weeks for a previous reviewer). When this happens, the blade no longer turns even though the spindle whirs merrily along.
I gave this blender one star to warn off those who haven't bought it. Those who have bought it and have had it for less than 30 days ought to get a refund ASAP. They're living on borrowed time. But for those, like me, who've had it for more than 30 days and can't get a refund, there may be a way to "fix" the problem without spending megabucks on shipping (which would only provide you with the same albeit a new blade assembly) and/or a new jar (which, again, would only postpone the inevitable).
To "fix" the problem (I won't know for a while how long this fix will last), wrap the business end of pliers with tape to protect the cap nut that holds the blade down. Remove this nut. Pull off the blade (this may take some jimmying; be patient; it's sharp). There may or may not be shreds of whatever used to be there to keep the blade moving. Remove all of that.
Now turn the jar on its side and look thru the glass at the blade assembly. If you turn the bolt from below, you'll note that the threaded portion of the bolt is flat on two sides, making an ovoid shape. The hole in the center of the blade corresponds to this shape. This is what make the blade turn. However, you will also notice that there is a smooth, round, 2mm space on the shank between the threaded portion of the bolt and the part that disappears into the various gaskets and so forth which hold all of this to the bottom of the blender jar. If there is nothing in this 2mm space to hold the blade in place against the threaded, ovoid portion, the blade drops down to this smooth, round portion and just sits there. You can tighten the cap nut, and you may get some stirring action, but this won't even puree a banana.
I don't know what occupied that 2mm space before and don't particularly care since it disintegrated. But I'm not ready to toss a blender that cost me over a hundred bucks, either. So, I went to the hardware store (in my city, Ace sells washers, o-rings, nuts and so forth loose) and got an o-ring -- metric -- that was 2.5mm thick with an inside diameter (ID) of 5mm and an outside diameter (OD) of 8mm. I also bought two stainless flat washers with the same ID and OD.
Now, the threaded portion of the bolt has a diameter of 5mm. But it then flares out slightly to 7mm. The easy way to stretch your 5mm ID o-ring over this 7mm shaft is to slip the o-ring over the threaded portion of the shaft, replace the blade, replace the cap nut, and screw down the cap nut. As you tighten this, the o-ring will be forced down and stretched over the wider portion of the bolt. This will help prevent leaking.
Now remove the cap nut again and jimmy off the blade. Slip your two stainless washers over the threaded portion of the bolt so that they occupy that 2mm round space. Replace the blade and the cap nut. Tighten everything up.
Of course, this takes much longer to explain that it takes to do. Once you have the o-ring and washers, you ought to be able to accomplish all of this in ten minutes or less.
On the other hand, if you don't care about the money and don't want to mess with any of this, you have no choice but to buy a "vintage" Waring made before the company was sold, unless you want to be taking it back again and again. Your best bet will likely be a Waring from the 40s or 50s. These can be found on eBay just about any time, and generally go for around 40 or 50 dollars. This will also be your only recourse if you want a "real" KitchenAid mixer. Hobart does now sell a countertop model for the home, but it's considerably more expensive than the current Whirlpool/KitchenAid mixers, which are in turn more expensive than the real KitchenAids available on eBay.
The moral to this is that if you have something that you bought a long time ago, like an old KitchenAid mixer or an old Black&Decker power tool (before B&D started manufacturing junk), and it still works, don't get rid of it.
Update, Nov 9:
I've used this blender for over four months now after "fixing" it (see my review of June 29) and I couldn't be happier. Not only does it perform like a Waring is supposed to perform, but I've had no further problems after my 59 cent fix.
I'm raising my rating to 3 stars from one (that is, I would if I could) because the blender now works the way it's supposed to, but I'm not rating it "5" because the buyer shouldn't have to fool with a homemade fix at all. But if you know your way around a pair of pliers, this is an excellent blender.
About that burning smell that a couple of reviewers complained about. I can't be sure, but I suspect that the smell comes from using too low a speed for whatever is being done. If the motor has to labor, it may give off that odor. Just kick it up a notch and see if the odor goes away.

Nostalgia MSB-585 Margarator 1-Gallon Margarita-Making Machine Review

Nostalgia MSB-585 Margarator 1-Gallon Margarita-Making Machine

I would have selected 0 stars but it was not a choice.
My husband had purchased the Margarator for me during the winter in preparation for opening the pool in the spring. I am the person that is in charge of refreshments whenever we entertain and he thought this would be helpful in saving me trips back and forth to the kitchen because it is so large and self storing.

I have now UNSUCCESSFULLY used the item 3 times and have disappointed over a dozen guests that were hoping for a refreshing slushy drink by the pool. After my first unsuccessful attempt, I had my husband read the directions that I had read. He set up the machine the same way that I did, filling the ice to the Max line, adding the 2.5 cups of Tequila mix and the bottle of margarita mix. We even pre-crushed the ice cubes to try and help it out. Again, after 12 minutes of letting it run, it produced 1/2 cup of slush that would come out of the nozzle and the rest was trapped inside with large pieces of ice.

So the third time we chopped up the ice more, added extra fluid to try and help it AND shut if off and stirred with a wooden spoon occasionally. Same results as the previous 2 times. So we yet again scoop out the ice chunks, jam a straw into it and hand it to our disappointed guests.

Because he bought this in the winter, I can no longer return it to the store that he ordered it from. Do we have the receipt - NO. I am willing to pay to ship this back to the Hellman Group - NO. We have wasted enough money on mixes and alcohol alone.

I am EXTREMELY annoyed and disappointed with the malfunction of this product, as are all my parched guests. Am I willing to try it yet again? Thats what the Hellma Group asked me to do after I contacted them. They suggest that I try it with pepsi, full of ice with 1/2 the liquid mix..let it run for 5-8 minutes then add the rest of the mix.
Guess what...it did not work. The margartor will take its place next to the garbage can in its original box for all to see as they drive by this weekend.

I first bought one of these for my father for Father's Day. You should know he's a very cynical guy and I kept my fingers crossed that it would meet with his approval! He and my mother often host parties, and he regularly serves ice-blended drinks made in a regular blender (i.e. stawberry daiqueris). His regular blender often left ice chunks that clogged the straw and remained in the bottom of the glass once the drink was finished. Being the cynical perfectionist he is, I bought him the Hamilton Beach Wavestation to see if it would work better. I chose this over the Back-to-Basics smoothie maker because of the poor quality reviews it gets on many sites.
The Wavestation is AWESOME! There is absolutely NO ice chunks, and no hand-stirring necessary because of the "wave action" mixing. Basically, the shape of the container and the blades create a vortex that continually pulls the top of the mix downward, unlike a typical blender that mostly just mixes what's in the bottom.
My hubby and I decided to buy one of these for ourselves too, mostly for fruit slushies for the kids (we don't entertain the way my parents do!). This is, in my opinion, the best smoothie maker option on the market.
NOTE: At first my dad complained that really thick mixes wouldn't come through the front dispenser and he had to pour them. We found this to be true too, but the pouring worked extremely well (no spills). Then I read in the instruction booklet that with thick mixes, try turning ON the machine, dispense, then turn it off again.

When I set out to find a blender after reading reviews I was totally confused. I felt as if I needed to lay down 500 bucks just to make a smoothie. I took the risk on losing 70 bucks and went with this one because of the metal drive and the extra power. So far I have had nothing but very pleasing experiences with this blender in making my daily smoothie. I usually throw in big ice cubes and frozen fruit some juice and protein and hit the smoothie preset button and 30 seconds later I have a perfectly blended smoothie. I haven't tried anything else on this blender, but I thought I come back to write a review after using this 100 times. So yeah this gets five stars from me because the price was right and its has done its job and looked good on my counter. What else could I ask for.

I bought this blender from Sams Club over 3 years ago and it is still working great. I use it every day. I guess some people just got a bad blender. It does crush ice almost as good as the Vita-Mix. I use it to make "green smoothies" because I don't eat a lot and I need to get my fruits and veggies daily. I mix frozen rasberries, blueberries, blackberries, mangos, hemp protein powder, 6 baby carrots, a huge bunch of fresh spinach, and parsley with some pomegranite juice and orange juice and 2 small packages of splenda. It pulverizes the frozen fruits and vegetables to a smooth liquid. Start it out on the lowest setting and let it run because it slowly pulls the ingredients down to the bottom. The directions say to do it that way. Maybe the people whose motor went out started it out on high all the time. Who knows? I thought I needed a Vita-Mix for this but turns out this blender is just as good at no where near the costs.

I have been using this belnder for more than 6 months now (paid $ 29.99 here on Amazon) and I just love it! I use it almost everyday to make a protein shake. I throw in a couple of sccops of protein powder, cup of soy millk, an appple, a banana and slices of water melon. The bleder works great in making a homogenous blend of all the ingedients. Thanks to the "wave logic" technology, it does work! It constantly mixes the contents by creating a wave like action with the help of the contoured jar.
I love the sturdy and huge plastic jar. It is very durable and seems to last long. I replaced my previous (Hamilton beach) blender becuase the jar broke (very thin) at the bottom screw portion. I have also tried to make drinks with ice and the blender seems to handle the ice well, but there are still chunks of ice left in the drink. May be I should give it more time! Anyways, the bottom line is this blender is well worth the money and is highly recommended.

The first B&D blender lasted 3 uses and then quit. The motor just quit. The seller replaced it with the same model and it died after 3 uses too. Same problem. Granted, these are heavy duty uses. I blend up about 5 quarts of fruits, vegetables, and nuts once a week. This includes carrots, celery, kale, other leafy veggies, onions, cauliflower, brocoli & stems, etc. Nevertheless, I have a 20-year old General Electric blender that still does it OK. If that old work horse can still cut it, these new B&D powerhouses should be able to last a lot longer than 3 uses! It is a powerful blender, but there is just no excuse for two blenders in a row biting it in exactly the same way.

I have been using this blender for a few weeks now on a daily basis making everything from smoothies, dips, soups, etc. I am so happy with the efficiency of this blender! It has unbelievable power and it's not extremely loud like my Cuisinart. It also comes apart very easily to clean, which I personally love because I never felt that I could get into all of the crevices of my Cuisinart to thoroughly clean it. My only suggestion would be, if you don't have a refrigerator that crushes ice then invest in an ice crusher (or you could go old school and put the ice cubes in a plastic bag and smash them to smitherings with a ladle). I would imagine with the power of this blender that it would not have a problem crushing whole ice cubes, but I have not attempted it because the manual suggested not to (and I definitely don't want to damage the blade). I hope this review was helpful. Happy blending!!

I got this based only on price, you can't get a blender for less than $23 even at your local stores. I received it this past weekend and I put it to the ultimate test: Iced drinks! I put some ice cubicals, without precrushing them, and this little guy performed great! I then added some juice and fruits and enjoyed a wonderful iced beverage. Highly recommended also if you lift weights and need an easy-to-clean blender to mix the unmixable protein shake. All in all a great product and so far so good. I give it an extra point for not using glass (i.e. does not break) and for being extra easy to clean.

Monterrey MT45151 Blender and Smoothie Maker with 48-Ounce Plastic Jar and Serving Spigot
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this unit to make smoothies, as I did not have a lot to spend at the time, and I believe that as long as you treat the unit with care, it should last for awhile.
It actually has the equivalent of 6 speeds, as on the right side is has the 3 speed and pulse buttons, and on the left, a High and Low button: 3 LOW AND 3 HIGH speeds.
The Blades in this unit are EXTREMELY sharp, and that is likely the key to it working as good as it does!
I will throw in a bunch of Grapes, a whole Kiwi, a couple of Kale leaves, a handful of Spinach, a half an Orange, a half a Banana and a whole but small Pear, 4 big ice cubes and a cup of water.
I start it on low, (or sometimes repeatedly hit the pulse button) where it pulls everything down in about 15 seconds, and then I will shift it to the highest speed to grind everything to a liquid, which takes about a minute and a half.
After running it that long, the motor seems to emit a strange odor, but that seems to be decreasing. It is pretty noisy on the highest speed.
I then take the blade unit off of the bottom of the container and rinse everything thoroughly, then let air dry.
The spigot top will unscrew and can be cleaned this way, but since I never use it, I keep it closed, then just open it when rinsing.
The only part that is seemingly vulnerable to a leak is the gasket that goes between the blade assembly and the container. If you over-tighten, it will deform and leak. If you don't tighten it enough, it will leak. It took me a day or two to figure how much to tighten it. You can see the gasket and it's contact to the container while tightening. If it starts to appear wiggly, you are over-tightening it. The seal between the actual blade shaft and base has not leaked.
I know this is not a Vita-Mix or Blendtec, but it will make good smoothies with that crazy sharp blade, and grind ice to non-existence in short order.
The only question now is, "how long will it last?", especially in daily use.
I bought this after seeing a Blendtec demo at Costco and wanted to see how I would fare personally by adding fruits and vegetables to my diet each day via smoothies, and I can tell you that I have lost 3 pounds this week so far, and feel absolutely great as compared to the sluggish me before.
The price I paid was about an 1/8th of the Blendtec, but don't think for one minute that the quality is anywhere close. It works, but for how long???

I owned a Hamilton Beach blender and food processor combo unit for over 10 years and loved it.....I used it every day until I wore it out. (I'd say a 10 year run is really a good run!) Because I loved my previous Hamilton Beach blender/food processor, I decided to look at blenders in the Hamilton Beach line again, and was very impressed at the wide selection they offer. My food processing and blending needs have increased as I have had a lot of dental work done recently, and still need more done, so I need a lot of smoothies and purees right now, so I use it more than once/day. There were no reviews for this blender on Amazon, but there were 3 reviews on WalMart's site, and everyone loved it, so I decided to give it a try. The features I wanted were 1.) A glass jar 2.) High power, low piercing sound 3.) Sturdy, solid base 4.) No push buttons for easy cleaning 5.) Stainless steel/black to match my kitchen/sleek, retro look because I leave it out on the counter 6.) Cord storage so there wasn't excess cord showing on the counter 7.) High performance 8.) Leak proof bottom of blender 9.) Wave action 10.) Sharp blades 11.) Easy to take apart and clean.... Boy, oh boy, does this baby meet every one of my hopes and dreams!!!!!!!!.......The base is not a heavy metal, so it is easy for me to handle, too.....The glass jar has a beautiful, classy light green tint to it.....(you can see it on the handle).....I like the wider glass jar verses a taller narrower one, too.....I love the easy to use pulse and speed dial....high and low feature, too.....perfect amount of "speeds", in my opinion.....I love the pour spout on the glass jar, my other blender didn't have that and I was always a little annoyed when I went to pour purees out of it and it drizzled down the side....whatever, pretty small annoyance on that blender because I still loved it and got my money's worth!......Over-all, this is an A-1 blender in every aspect of my compliment of it.....Props to the small appliance engineer who designed it!!!!....Love it, Love it, Love it.....Thanks Hamiliton Beach!!!!!!!!!

This blade works with the balmix, but doesn't seem to fit as well as the original.
