(More customer reviews)Just before Hurricane Charley and his 2 sisters rubbed up against the Orlando area a couple years ago, I bought the Coleman 400 Watt Inverter. We lost our power for 5 days at a time.
Clamping this unit directly to the battery and closing the hood, I ran an extension cord into the house and plugged a 3-way into the end. We could run 3 12in. oscillating fans all night and sleep comfortably!
Most fans draw less than 1 amp per hour, so the draw on the battery is minimal. Just fire up the car (sitting in the AC) for a few minutes and the battery is topped off.
I went this route because the generator method has too many negatives for me: Theft or worse, fumes or worse, and the incessant noise. This can make your neighbors more than a little testy, especially if they have no power at all. And as always happens, the more you have the more you want. All we really needed was a way to cool off and cold drinks. The cooling off problem resolved, we turned to cooling food and drinks. This is easy. Freeze clean gallon milk jugs with drinkable water. As it melts, you've got cold water! (Unlike tornadoes, hurricanes let you know they are coming; you have time to prepare.) All of your cold stuff will be cold already so the ice chest and frozen water will work fine for a good many days. 2 ice chests lets you go get more stuff without it thawing or melting before you get back home. We use a Coleman stove outside for cooking and making coffee. The coffee became a huge hit with the neighbors! We use battery operated lights instead of candles. Candles are a no no! Not much light, unwanted heat and a real fire hazard. Candles are for romance. A boom box will run forever on batteries as long as you don't use the cd or cassette player. and lastly, we have a small battery operated TV. We are news junkies.
Here's how to figure how many amps you are drawing off your car battery:
Amps X Volts(120)= Watts. Examples: .5amps X 120volts = 60 Watts. 3amps X 120volts = 360 Watts. That's the limit for this 400 Watt Inverter, so forget your big ticket items.

Coleman 5053A751 ProCat Perfectemp Catalytic Propane Heater with Instastart Technology Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased this catalytic propane heater to heat my tent for winter camping with my son for his Cub Scout winter camps. I tried the heater out on a three night camp out the last week of October, 2006 at 7,000 feet in the San Bernardino Mountains. Those nights dipped in the high 20's. The heater worked very well with only a few concerns, which were easily overcome. I placed the lit heater in my tent well in advance of retiring for the evening and 6 hours later replaced the emptied propane cylinder right away and re-started the heater for the remainder of the morning. My son and I were nice and warm when we went to bed and stayed warm all the night through. Sure is nice to be able to stand up and dress in a warm tent in the morning. Next we will be trying the heater out at a snow camp in February with temps expected to be in the low teens.
Reading the directions dismissed any apprehensions of opertion. And yes, as another reviewer commented... the unit does throw out a small fire ball when first lit. YIKES! However, should you read the instructions BEFORE USE... you are forewarned about this and the reader is instructed NOT to light the heater facing anyone/pets/tent or indoors because of this issue. Instructions are not placed with the item for looks you know, you have to read them! OK, it spits out a small fire ball at first. Big deal... nothing too intense that an average human can not adapt to.
As for the "hot oil smell," noted by another reviewer... yes, there is a "smell," that emits from the operating unit. How one describes that smell will vary. Each individual person's sensitivity to that smell will also vary. To me the "smell" was simply like sightly hot metal, as with any other heater, and faint enough that it did not bother me at all. However, should one be rather sensitive to the "smell" it may prove uncomfortable.
The battery operated fan that blows the heated air away from the unit is awesome. The fan does not blow the volume of air like a fan on your desk or counter top might. The fan is much smaller, yet it does greatly aid in the ciculation of the heat. Without the fan on, the heat is simply radiated out and the heat is not evenly distributed throughout the tent. One huge issue with the fan... it eats batteries like a child eats candy. Two "D" batteries will run the fan for one full night. That's it, no more. Recharable batteries are strongly recommended to keep the battery budget in check, because the fan really needs to be used.
Some advise... 1.) Light the heater OUTSIDE of your tent (remember there will be small fire ball emiting from the heater when it is lit). 2.) Start the unit and place in your tent at least one full hour before going to bed. That way your tent will be nice and warm when you go to bed. 3.) Keep a replacement propane cylinder close by for replacement in the early morning hours. Should you allow the tent to cool before replacing the propane cylinder and re-igniting the heater it will take a very, very long time to warm the tent up. Remeber... nights are coldest the hours just before dawn (usally) which is much colder than when you started to warm your tent up the previous evening. Also, the larger the tent (or area being heated) the longer it will take to bring up and maintain the temp. I am going to buy a second heater for my large three room tent. This way I can start one heater well before going to bed to heat the tent, and then 6 hours before I plan to wake up I can start the second heater. With two heaters operating at the same time in my large tent the heat will be easily maintained (hopfully even with winds) but also the first heater will will run out of fuel and shut off in the night and the second heater will continue heating maintaining the temp without me getting up to change out the propane cylinder. 4.) Place the heater in an area of your tent in which nothing will come in contact with it. The heater grid gets very hot and will burn you or any other item that contacts it.
All in all, this ProCat Catalytic Propane Heater is a great heater. It is larger than others on the market (the heating head is larger in diameter), including other Coleman brand heaters. It appears to be the only one with a fan to assist in heat distribution. It puts out a good amount of heart. The only serious failing on this ProCat heater is that the output can not be regulated. The heater is either on full blast or completly off.
Please note though, the more ventilated your tent the less effective any heater will be in heating such a tent, let alone this particular heater. Thus, should you have a "summer family camping tent" that is very well ventilated either consider purchasing two heaters to heat your tent, or in addition to this heater purchase a tent that is designed for cold weather (which is less vented than summer family tents).

Coleman 40-Quart Wheeled Cooler Review

(More customer reviews)The handle on this cooler is too short. At 5'5", I am the shortest person in my family, and even I had to stoop over a bit to roll this thing. Taller members found it downright uncomfortable to haul. If you lift up on the handle so that you can stand upright, the cooler tilts far back toward the wheels and at times fell over on its short side. Filled with drinks and ice it gets very heavy, and is difficult to move even with the wheels. To anybody at Coleman: please invent a cooler with four wheels, (with a collapsible long handle) that you can roll along like a baby stroller. My aching back will thank you. On the plus side, the coldness of the thing was great. To experiment, I have not emptied the cooler since our picnic over 48 hours ago, and there is still ice in there and the drinks are still cold.

Coleman 48-qt. Chest Cooler - Blue Review

(More customer reviews)I am always looking for coolers with excellent build quality and that can maintain ice for longer periods of time. I recently got into "5 day" and "6 day" coolers. Now that I tested a couple, I have a basis for comparison in regards to performance to the "traditional" coolers. This is a review of the Coleman 48 Quart Chest Cooler.
When packing coolers, pre-chilled drinks and cubed ice are used. I do not use blocks of ice, which do maintain much longer than cubed ice. I had this cooler for about seven years. This cooler kept its contents ice cold for approximately 24 hours. This is disappointing considering the extra trips to purchase more ice when using the cooler for more than a day.
However, within the seven-year period of ownership, the cooler has maintained itself very well. Nothing has broke on this cooler, there are no leaks from the drainage spout, and the cooler does not appear to be degrading. The bottom line is that the build quality, with the exception of the lack of insulation, appears to be very good.
Overall, the Coleman 48 Quart Chest Cooler has good build quality but significantly underperforms today's "5 day" coolers on the market. The Igloo MaxCold 40 Quart Wheeled Cooler and Coleman Ultimate Xtreme 50 Quart Wheeled Cooler easily outperformed this cooler in their respective tests, keeping ice for an average of 72 hours. This cooler is rated a 3.0 out of 5.0 due to its significant underperformance in maintaining its contents ice cold.

I like everything about it except for the hindges. They seem very cheap and not near as durable as my old cooler. I am afraid they won't last long since this cooler goes out on the river with me. I am thinking about taking the hindges from my old cooler and trying to put them on this one.

(More customer reviews)I bought this cooler to plug-in and sit in the back of one of my Jeeps for road trips and weekend getaways where we want to bring our own food instead of eating out and especially fast food. Recently my wife and I rented a small cabin and we made our meals at home, put the meals in this cooler for the trip and then we used it as a fridge at the cabin (the cabin just had electricity).
I didn't buy this to be a full time fridge so I can't say how many years it will last? So far it works just fine, is quiet and keeps everything cold (including beer!). It's benefit is that no ice is required, and in fact you are not suppose to use ice with it as the moisture from the melting ice may cause the fan to ice up. For those that have said that theirs froze up, they may have put ice in it? I do have another ice cooler to use when I can't plug this one in.
The cigarette lighter power cord is long enough so that you can place it about anywhere in your vehicle. But be sure to also buy the power cord for plugging into a standard electrical outlet when not in your vehicle.

(More customer reviews)I purchased this cooler to augment my already well used Igloo five-day cooler (which I love.) We took them both camping and I was shocked to find that I had to keep restocking this cooler with ice every two days. The lid is designed to be pushed down, but has no tight lid-locking mechanism like the Igloo does, so I'm guessing that's the major difference. Although we took great pains to make sure that we tapped the lid down all the way around everytime we removed something from the cooler, it just did not work as advertised. I am very disappointed in this product. If it weren't for the fact that I would have to pay back the "prime" shipping if I returned it to Amazon, along with the return shipping and restocking fees, I would send it back immediately. I did email Coleman about this product, but have yet to receive any reply from them. My advice? Buy the Igloo and save money in the long run.

It kept our food cool during the drive and overnight but by morning all the ice was melted so we drove out to a store and got new ice that afternoon but by the evening all the ice had melted again. I don't think this cooler will work too well if you're trying to keep things cool for days at a time.

IGLOO MaxCold 24 Can Cooler Review

(More customer reviews)I am always searching for personal-sized coolers that have excellent quality in their build and can keep its contents ice cold longer. The Igloo MaxCold 24 (16 qt) was the only personal to mid-sized cooler that claimed any significant number of days - 3 days.
This Igloo MaxCold 24 was tested using pre-chilled drinks and cubed ice, which lasted approximately 36 hours. When testing coolers, I leave the cooler in a room, the average temperature highs are usually around 90F, and the coolers are opened about every 4 hours to see how the ice is holding up and to resemble periodic use.
So far, this cooler has kept items ice cold longer than the other personal sized cooler tested to this point, which includes the Coleman Excursion 9 qt (approximately 24 hours), Rubbermaid 20 qt Ice Chest (approximately 10 hours), Coleman Flip Top 5 qt (approximately 8 hours). I was really hoping for the "3 day" claim, but was not that disappointed as this cooler appeared to keep its contents colder for a significantly longer period of time than any other personal-sized cooler. In addition, I do not use blocks of ice, which maintains much longer.
There appears to be a deliberate effort by Igloo to ensure that the lid was well insulated. The lid appears to be aligned very well with the body of the cooler and has a snug fit that locks in place nicely when closed, which will be helpful in locking in the cold. The make of the cooler appears to be of excellent quality, everything fits well, appears durable, and nothing bad of note. Most other coolers that I browsed through at the store often appeared dirty, has scratches, and some of the insulation "seeping" out of the mends in the cooler.
Overall, the Igloo MaxCold 24 is an excellent cooler and I would rate the build quality and its ability to keep the contents ice cold at the top of all personal coolers. 4.9 out of 5.0, which would have been higher if the ice was maintained closer to the 3 day claim.
Update on December 7, 2009:
I finally got to test out the Igloo MaxCold 24 using a half-gallon carton block of ice along with two frozen 16 ounce water bottles and four trays of ice cubes, which was added to several pre-chilled cans of iced tea. I just needed to see if the cooler would live up to its claim of "up to 3 days" of ice retention. The ice was maintained for 68 hours (2 and 5/6 days or 2 days and 20 hours), just 4 hours short of the 72 hour claim. It came very close to the maximum claimed retention and the water was still close to ice cold when I emptied the cooler.
On another note, the first cooler that I purchased looked exactly like it is portrayed in the picture, with the "MaxCold" badging formed into the body of the cooler. I recently purchased two more Igloo MaxCold 24 coolers as gifts for friends who took a notice to the nice size, fit, form, and design of the cooler (it was really interesting to see one of them really examining the Igloo MaxCold 24 and he even brought his own cooler to compare the quality between the two). While the form, fit, and color remains the same, the badging formed in the cooler states "Igloo." In addition, both appeared to have slight indentations on the side (barely noticeable, but I am a picky consumer). I am wondering if this is a result from purchasing the two coolers from a different retailer or lower quality control on behalf of Igloo.
Either way, the Igloo MaxCold 24 is still an excellent performing cooler with a nice build design and fit. It still has my vote for top personal-sized cooler. The Coleman Excursion coolers have excellent build quality and performance, but the Igloo MaxCold 24 has a significant edge in cold retention. Still rate the Igloo MaxCold 24 a 4.9 out of 5.0, as it fell just short of the 3 day claim for "ice retention" and the slight inconsistencies in the make, which would both probably not be a big deal to the majority of consumers.

For our family of 6 we use it for a variety of things. When we go on long car trips, we use a power inverter and plug it into our car. We keep drinks in it and sometimes sack lunches. Saves us a lot of time and money over stopping and buying these items on the road. We have a camper and camp often. We use the plug in cooler outside the camper (we bring it in if it rains) and keep drinks only in it. That way we can get cold water/soda out of it without fanning the camper refrigerator so often. (The camper refrigerator cannot keep food cold enough if the door is fanned all the time.) When we do get to go to hotels as a family, we usually bring the cooler and use it once again for drinks and lunch supplies and sometimes milk for breakfasts if needed. It keeps things much cooler when it is in an air conditioned room than when it is fighting against the high temperatures of camping in the summer, so I can use it for more food items when used indoors.
We used it several years, and I'm replacing it this year. Finally the fan is making an extreme amount of noise. I imagine that sitting it on the ground at dusty campsites over the years and letting it suck dust into it's fans is likely the culprit. It is still working, but I doubt for long. It has also become so noisy that it drives us crazy to have it running anywhere near us.
I think I got my money's worth on this unit, despite needing to replace it.
I knocked it one star because I wish it could keep things colder than it does. Also because the light color design gets dirty looking quite quick while camping.
I never used the heating option so I have no comment on that feature.
It will drain a car battery, so don't plan to plug it into the car battery when you are not driving.
