(More customer reviews)I purchased this portable ice maker for myself. In the box, it was large, heavy and cumbersome. I got it out of the box and managed to heft it onto the countertop, next to my sink. You have to wait four hours before you can use it so the refrigerant can settle. During that time, I washed the basket, scoop, and inside of the unit with warm and mildly soapy water. I suggest letting the unit stay open during the four hours to help the plastic odor dissipate. After four hours had passed, I filled up the water tank up to the bottom of the plastic basket. (You put the water in the front portion, underneath the removable ice basket.) I plugged in the machine and the "add water" light came on. Whaaa??? I pushed start and the machine attempted to begin but shut itself off because of the "add water" light. I added more water so it was slightly higher than the bottom of the basket and added some to the top where the icemaker mechanism was and then I pressed start again. I was happy to see the machine stayed on and within 7 minutes I had medium sized ice cubes. The medium cubes are slightly over 1 inch long with a hole in the middle. A gallon of water made enough ice cubes to fill three gallon sized zippable freezer bags. The unit stopped making ice when the water level dropped too low. At that point I turned it off and drained it because I had enough ice to last me for the week. Do the first batches of ice taste "plasticky"? I think they do, but they can be thrown away.

The problem is, with only light use the unit failed completely after only 2 weeks. The unit stopped making ice and got super hot to the touch on its metal case. I unplugged it and let it sit overnight. The next day I plugged it in again and had the same result. It had plenty of fresh water to work with so that was not the problem. I am trying to get a return number for it. Dont waste your time with this unit. It is nice but does not work.

(More customer reviews)I purchased this to go with my Mr. Coffee BVMC-FM1 20-Ounce Frappe Maker, since I was using so much ice.
The best way to use this is to turn it on when you need to make ice, unless you are going to need a lot in a hurry - then you can freeze the cubes ahead of time.
1) How much ice does it make?
Well, each time it makes a batch, it makes between one and two cups ... that's every 6-10 minutes. So in an hour, it will make 6-10 cups of ice.
2) How much ice does it hold?
I was able to empty 2 trays into a gallon freezer bag (barely), so I'd say that it holds about 1/2 gallon of ice before it automatically shuts off.
3) Do you need to keep it turned on?
You can, but you don't have to. Put the ice you've made into your freezer and turn it off. When you aren't going to use it for awhile, you drain any extra water out so that you can be sure your water to make the ice is fresh and healthy.
4) Will it keep ice frozen?
Actually, Yes. I don't know for how long, but the sides seem stay cool, and it is well insulated, so the ice I made the night before was "still" ice in the morning. The ice sits in a basket over the water supply, so if there is any melting, it drips down and is remade into ice again. I suggest for long-term use, that you simply remove the ice and place it in your freezer.
5) Do you need anything special?
No. You take it out of the box, wash the parts, add water, and turn it on. I'm using purified water, but that's for flavor, NOT because it's required. And, just a "green" note - for the environment and to keep a little green in your pocket - don't buy bottled water for this - it's a lot cheaper (and no bottles to recycle) if you use a purifier or purifying pitcher.
6) Is it noisy?
You can hear the ice cubes clink into the basket every few minutes while it is running. They freeze around little poles, so the only sound is that of water dripping and a small fan which removes the heat (kind of like the one on a refrigerator).
It's a nice solution for those of us who don't have an ice maker in our freezer and who don't have the patience to keep filling those little ice trays to make enough ice!
***Updated June 28 I have noted that with our recent heat wave, that the ice does melt, however, as I mentioned above, it simply melts into the bottom and then the machine remakes the ice. Not only am I using it for my frappes, but I also found it awesome when I froze four gallons of ice for a large event where I knew I'd need more ice on hand.

So far so good, Small, pumps out ice quickly, we use Ice in everything we drink, so it keeps right up with us. I would have given this 5 stars but the only issue I have with this, is that its very noisy. When the tray lifts up to drop the ice into the basket the elevation noise is quite loud. but have gotten used to it I think :0.. Friends of ours have several different brands of these ranging in high and low pricing, and for the money, they are all the same.. I would recommend this product without a doubt.

(More customer reviews)OK, the Danby Ice N Easy makes ice as quickly as it advertises and you don't need a drain. However there are several things that you might want to know before buying one of these babies...
1. The ice tastes like plastic - I tried vinegar, baking soda and flushing the icemaker with gallons of water, but no joy.
2. The ice melts very quickly - it's not hard ice like you get from an icemaker that lives in your freezer. This has a nasty problem of then making your drink taste like plastic as well.
3. It frequently runs into problems like ice cubes getting lodged in places they shouldn't be, which automatically shut off the system until you attend to it - which means, it stops making ice.
4. When the bin gets full, the unit stops making ice. OK, this makes sense. However, there is no freezer unit in the icemaker, so the ice melts. If you don't need ice for several hours, then all you will have is a melted ice blob because the unit doesn't seem to sense when the ice has melted enough to start making more.
So, unless you enjoy watered down plastic tasting drinks as well as attending to the icemaker on an hourly basis to make sure that everything is still working, I would recommend against this machine and others like it. You just can't get good ice without a freezer component. Maybe this thing is good for boaters that just don't have any other options, but for the home I really wouldn't put up with it.

(More customer reviews)I was a bit concerned about buying this because the reviews were not too good. But it arrived on time and in good condition. As one reviewer pointed out, the user guide leaves a lot to be desired; I still can't figure out what one grey, flat rectangular part is supposed to do (but not using it doesn't seem to be a problem, so it can't be too important). There's enough info in it to get the process going, though.
For some reason, I expected it to start making ice faster, but it does take awhile (at least 30 minutes or more) for the unit to reach freezing temperature, so don't give up too soon. The ice it produces is clear and tastes "restaurant" great (I used bottled drinking water in the reservoir), and I am very finicky about the taste of water and ice. I'd read that with some other ice makers users had needed to run vinegar through the system to get rid of a funny taste at first, but that is definitely not required for this unit.
You'll need to transfer the ice cubes to a container that you keep in the freezer to keep them frozen. The ice making unit is just for making the ice, not for storing it.
This is a pricey solution to eliminate the monotony of filling ice trays day after day after day, but I'm thrilled to be able to do so.

(More customer reviews)I've had this product for 7 months. I've used it regularly & had absolutely no problems at all with it. Except for the initial start up (which only lasts a couple of minutes) it runs quietly. It makes ice fast, the first batch is usually ready within 5-10 minutes and each successive batch takes about 4-6 minutes on medium sized cubes.
I use the medium sized cube setting, though there isn't a lot of difference between the 3 sizes. The ice will be wet because this is an ice maker, not a freezer. This isn't a problem if you are going to use the ice right away. It comes with a handy little scoop too. If you want to store the ice for later use, you will need to freeze it before adding it to an ice dispenser. I just pour the ice into gallon sized zipper freezer bags & stash them away. It's simple to separate the cubes after they've hardened up a bit. I usually pour them into the ice dispenser in my refrigerator freezer at that point.
I bought this ice maker because we have a big family & lots of guests and our ice maker in the refrigerator freezer has trouble keeping up with demand. This is the perfect solution. You can make ice quickly as needed or make it & store it ahead of time.
We keep it out on the counter all the time. Most people think it's a bread maker. I have found it to be quick, quiet & dependable. I'm very satisfied with it. For the money spent on it (less than $200 including shipping) I consider it one of the best appliance investments I've ever made.

The unforseen disadvantage is that you must manually fill the unit with water every couple of days. The advantage, however, is that if you use filtered or bottle water the ice cubes are tasteless. In fact, as the ice cubes melt in water, they remain pure and tasteless because they do not share the air of refrigerator the way an automatic ice maker that is built in does. So the ice melts, but you can just add more cubes without tasting all the flavors within your refrigerator.
Sits on the counter top and purrs away making plenty of ice for a family of four.

In spite of running the clean cycle several times (the instructions say once), cleaning the unit with baking soda, and leaving a box of baking soda in the unit over night, our ice still reeks and tastes of plastic. Thinking it might be our tap water, we ran Evian through it.
The ice still tastes like plastic.
Hopefully, this will pass over time, but buyer beware...if you want to use your ice maker immediately, think again :(. Also, the maker doesn't store ice. Not a huge problem in our case as we have an extra freezer, but just be sure you're aware of that before you hit "buy".

(More customer reviews)I recently moved into a small but wonderful apartment. The refridgerator with freezer is sufficient but quite small. Buying that 10 lb bag of ice at the supermarket as usual is no longer viable. It takes up too much space in the freezer.
I use a lot of ice in a huge mug for water and such and it must be filtered as is my water. Well, I must say that this particular Ice Maker continues to be a pleasant surprise.
It's sturdy and attractive and makes ice continually. It doesn't have to be connected to anything other than one electric socket. I pour in a gallon of fresh filtered water and within minutes ice is formed.
It's quite ingenious. As the stored ice very slowly melts in the basket the water goes right back into the system to be made into ice again.
It makes a basket full of ice then stops until the ice is taken and the basket needs to be topped off keeping the basket full to the brim with ice.
The freezing compressor only runs for a few minutes to freeze the ice than turns itself off until needed. It's so quiet that we don't even know that it's there at all.
I followed the instructions on set up and ran vinegar and lemon juice through to clean any machine taste out, and it truly is as advertised.
Go ahead and feel good about this purchase. Few things we buy in this world will serve us as long or as well as this Sunpentown Ice Maker. Enjoy!

(More customer reviews)I just used my NewAir ice maker for the first time today. I love it.
It's slower than I expected - I thought I'd have enough ice for a large iced tea in just minutes. No. However, now that I know, I can start it up a hour or so before I need it and have more than enough ice for a few large iced teas.
It's very easy to use. Give it a wipe down with a damp cloth before the first use, fill the reservoir with water, put the "ice tray" in, and select the cube size. It makes small, medium and large. I started with medium, which gave a cup-shaped cube about an inch long.
It seems to work by freezing water onto metal prongs, giving a cube that is hollow and open on one end. Keep that in mind when you choose the size. The open cubes will cool your beverage faster - more contact area, but they will also melt faster - thinner ice than a solid cube.
If it stops midway before all the water is used, try leveling the ice cubes in the tray. (Or bag them and move to the freezer.) There seems to be a sensor that stops production if the tray is too full - better than ice cubes all over the floor.
So, simple to use, needs only your basic 110 power, a little heavy, but manageable for almost anyone, I'd think, since I'm not exactly a weight lifter. I love the crimson exterior. Oh, and it even comes with a little ice scoop.

ADDENDUM: It doesn't freeze and hold the cubes over a period of time, e.g., overnight. However...if you leave it on, the ice will melt and drip back into the water reservoir, starting up the ice making process again...and again. Kind of hard on the energy bills, so bag it and store in the freezer if you don't use it all.

I have been using it straight, non stop for about 25 days. I have not turned if off since I unpacked and plugged it. The Sunpentown IM-101 works extremely well. I needed an ice maker in our apartment to produce ice cubes for a specific ice cooling machine, which my husband has been using after an orthopedic surgery. This ice maker machine has been the God sent to our family. The only drawback is that the machine, as with any other of its kind, is a bit too large. However, as far as operating it, its very easy. Just add the water, plug it in the AC, and it does all the work for you. I love the shape of the ice it produces, which is always great for our ice tea or cold drinks. I strongly recommend it. I had read several reviews prior to purchasing the Sunpentown IM-101. I did encounter very negative review on other brands of countertop ice maker machines and it made me very concerned about acquiring one. When I received this machine in the mail, i made sure to save its original shipping boxes just in case I needed to return it. Needless to say, the shipping boxes were already destroyed. The machine is great. I strong suggest you to purchase this particular one and look no longer.
