(More customer reviews)Our ice maker broke awhile back. My husband is very handy around the house, but he has so many little jobs to do that I didn't want to add another. I thought to myself, "how lazy am I, really? Am I too lazy to make my own ice cubes?". So I decided that the ice maker could wait. I bought these locally and am happy I did. Yes, they are a little more expensive than typical ice cube trays, but they are worth it. I have arthritis, carpal tunnel, and fibromyalgia so squeezing can be painful (sometimes I can't feel my hands at all). It is quite easy for me to get the ice out of these trays. My mother, who is 76 and has severe arthritis, can easily use these trays as well (I have found OXO products in general to be good for those of us dealing with chronic conditions causing hand-pain).
A major plus is that these trays have lids. I leave them on while twisting the trays to break the ice so that the cubes don't pop out all over the place. Then I just slide them off and pour the cubes into a container for storage in the freezer.
My only criticism is that it can be a little awkward to slide the lids on correctly after filling them with water. It's really operator-error and if I actually pay attention to what I'm doing, the lid slides on with just a little effort.
All in all these trays are a really good alternative to traditional ice cube trays.

(More customer reviews)Ever since acquiring my favorite piece of furniture (a bar cabinet), I've been delving into the mysteries of mixology bit by bit. It's one of those things that I was initially drawn to in college, due to a fascination for the intricate alchemy that is the mixture of strange liquids in all sorts of colors, but I was too poor then to be able to afford the necessary ingredients and hadn't yet developed a palate for more unusual tastes. Once we decided not to become house-poor by buying a new place but instead concentrated on making the place we had more livable, I began stocking up on different liquors, having already begun a love affair with the gin martini (dry as can be) two years ago.
In that time, I've had three cocktail shakers, and tried several others, and I've finally found the one that, to me, is perfection: the OXO 16-oz Cocktail Shaker. Yes, I know that real mixologists swear by the Boston-type shaker, which is basically a stainless steel container which you can fit a glass of similar proportions into, and I haven't really given that one a fair shake. But the OXO has some things that make it more appealing. It is easier to pour from without making a mess. The double wall construction of the main portion make it possible to hold onto it while shaking without freezer burning your hand. And, best of all, it's dishwasher safe! It's large enough to handle making two drinks at once and it doesn't leak, unlike the last large stainless steel shaker I had.
My mother-in-law was the first to introduce me to the OXO line, as we continue to get new additions to our OXO collection every Christmas. Everything we've got by them is well-designed and great to use (including the other bar accessory, the citrus strainer). I shouldn't have been surprised that their shaker is great.

Oxo Good Grips Cookie Scoop Review

(More customer reviews)This cookie scoop from Oxo has improved my cookies markedly. You know how that last minute or two in the oven is critical--the difference between underdone, just right, and burnt-around-the-edges? Well, if your cookies aren't the same size to start, you're never going to hit that "just right" sweet spot. The big ones are underdone when the little ones are just right, or if the big ones are perfect, the small ones are burnt. I used to scoop cookie dough with a spoon, but this little gem of a tool is much more precise and neater to use.
Unlike cheaper scoops, the squeeze action is very smooth. It doesn't stick halfway through the squeeze, it doesn't require a lot of pressure, and the release is firm but not too firm--I used a scoop once that had a recoil like a rifle.
By the way, I have narrow hands but don't find the width of the handles to be a problem. Oxo is well known for its ergonomic designs, and this tool is no exception--I just baked 10 dozen cookies for a school event and my hands weren't tired at all. (My back is another matter!)
The dough releases well (even really sticky doughs like almond macaroons) and drops in a nice rounded ball into your hand. A quick roll to round off the bottom and it's ready for the cookie sheet.
The rated measure is 1-1/2 tablespoon (that's level, by the way) (well, of COURSE I checked for myself... I'm a baker, and that means "compulsive about measuring"). Oxo also makes a large and small scoop, but this one is the best size for the kitchen standard cookies: tollhouse, peanut butter, and the like.
I've thrown mine in the dishwasher several times with no problem. This is a good thing, because there are several crevices inside the handles and in the spring mechanism between them that could be a bit fiddly once the peanut butter dries.
Do yourself (and your cookie-eaters) a favor and pick up this gadget. I can't find a thing in the world wrong with it.

(More customer reviews)Finally, an ice cream scoop that gets the ice cream out of its container AND then out of the scoop into the dish. Sounds like a no-brainer, right? Should be -- but this is the first scoop design I've ever used that managed both with equal ease. Most of the old-fashioned ones had a release mechanism that got the ice cream into the dish pretty well, but needed tons of hot water and the strength of 10 men and a boy to get the goodie out of its native container. More recent versions have made the container-to-scoop process less of a herculean task, but need the assistance of finger or other appendage to make it the rest of the way to the bowl.
This delightful object has solved both problems. In addition, it's a God-send for baking cookies. I operate a virtual cookie factory every Christmas and have tried many techniques to speed the dough-to-baking pan transfer. Last year, I saw this scoop and its smaller (2 teaspoon) sibling at a kitchen supply place and purchased both. I was able to bang through all my drop cookies in record time -- hurrah!
Whether ice cream or cookie baking is your passion, I can't think of a better way to spend 10 bucks!

(More customer reviews)This scoop works great. I first tried the pointed ice cream scoop and couldn't use it. I have problems with my wrists. I have used other Oxo tools and love them, so I tried again with this scoop. It works so well it seems to be designed with me in mind. It is easy to dip out even the hardest ice cream now and the bail pops the ice cream out of the scoop --clean as a whistle. You can wash it in the dishwasher too.

It's all very well and good that your scoop scoops ice cream efficiently. But what to do if the ice cream remains stick in the scoop? That will never happen if you are using this well designed tool. Squeeze the plastic trigger and a thin metal piece slips behind the ice cream, separating it cleanly from the scoop so that it drops large round dollops of ice cream into the waiting bowl or cone.

Although the scoop's design is great and it handles well, the coating on my scoop has begun to peel after only 6 mos. of use. And I don't really need teflon in my super fudge chunk, thank you very much.

Oxo Good Grips Points Ice Cream Scoop Review

(More customer reviews)We had the OXO Good Grips Points Ice Cream Scoop and thought it was pretty good. Actually, it was pretty good when we were buying Edy's or Breyer's ice cream. Then I started buying Trader Joe's premium ice cream, which is SO AMAZINGLY GOOD... It's better than Haagen Daaz or Ben & Jerry's, and cheaper, too. Back to the ice cream scoop, though: it broke. It snapped off where that little skinny "metal" neck goes into the handle. And then I learned that it's really made of metal-coated plastic.
It has been replaced with a Zyliss Ice Cream scoop, which ROCKS. I can't imagine how that one would ever break, so now I'll go review that one!

Oxo SteeL Ice Bucket and Ice Tongs with Tong Holder Review

(More customer reviews)This is a gorgeous ice bucket. It is large and stylish. However, I cannot recommend it because of the lid. Unlike how it is portrayed in it's picture, the lid is actually attached to the bucket. You can't take it off. Instead, it pivots and swings up. The problem with this is that you cannot fill the bucket all the way up with ice because you have to leave a good amount of room at the top for the lid to swing on the insdide. And, because the lid is not removable, it gets in the way especially if you want to use this bucket as a champagne/wine cooler. Because when the lid is up, it cuts the top opening in half and you cannot remove a bottle from the narrow opening. Poor design flaw. I want a lid I can remove and put aside if I don't need it, rather than it sticking up in the way. You'll notice in OXO's main picture of this bucket on this site it is shown without the lid. Why? Because even they know (at least the photographer knows) the bucket will sell better looking that way. Hey OXO, that's the same look I wanted this bucket to have sitting on my bar!
Would it have killed OXO to put a knob or handle on the lid and let the consumer decide if they want the lid on or off? I swear sometimes I think manufacturers never bother actually testing out the things they design. If they had, surely they would have noticed how bad their lid idea was. Or they could have looked at every other ice bucket on the market and noticed theirs is the only one that has an attached lid. That should have been a clue to them that there are obvious merits to having a removable one.
To make matters worse, the lid is clear plastic. I don't understand why. First of all, it's an ice bucket! I think everyone knows ice is inside without needing to peek through a clear lid. Secondly, a metal lid will keep the temperature inside colder longer than than a plastic lid. That is why the bucket is made of metal, not plastic. Metal is a better conductor of heat and cold.

I wish I had noticed the lid before I purchased this bucket. I didn't pay close enough attention. I suppose I assumed it was a normal lid that came off like all the others, especially considering it is photographed that way! But as soon as I unpackaged this bucket, I took one good look at the lid and said, "Oh no!" Thankfully I bought the bucket from my local Bed Bath & Beyond making its return very easy. I am sorry I have to return it because this really is a nice looking bucket. However, I don't intend on spending $40 on an ice bucket to just sit there, look pretty, and receive compliments. That's my job as hostess :-). I need an ice bucket that is functional too.
Oh, well...my search for the perfect ice bucket continues.
