CUISINART BLENDER/FOOD PROCESSOR Review

CUISINART BLENDER/FOOD PROCESSOR

I purchased this product about 2 years ago. It lasted less than a year before the blender jar blade came apart. I still use the mini chopper occasionally for making small amounts of salad dressing or pesto.
This product is also rather lightweight compared to my most recent Kitchen Aid Blender.
I would recommend buying a heavy-duty blender and nice food processor instead if you can spare the funds.

Cuisinart CSB-33BC Quick Prep Hand Blender, Brushed Chrome Review

Cuisinart CSB-33BC Quick Prep Hand Blender, Brushed Chrome
Average Reviews:

The blender feature of this is excellent (5 stars)... it does not splash what you are mixing out onto the counter. It is also quiet and the two speeds are great.
The down sides are:
1). It does an extremely poor job (one star) of whipping small quantities of whipping cream. Models with a separate 'whip' attachment are better suited for whipping small quantities of cream. The enclosed recipe calls for a cup, and under a cup just won't work, so technically it does exactly what it says it will. Other models with a separate whip can whip < 1/4 cup of cream easily.
2). This is one-piece tool and cannot be put in the dishwasher.

Cuisinart SmartPower Premier 600-Watt Blenders Review

Cuisinart SmartPower Premier 600-Watt Blenders

I have yet to see a blender do everything perfectly. This blender isn't likely to go very far on your counter; maybe not because you'll use it all the time, but because it's a pain to lift. Good if you have dedicated bar space, but you'd like to be able to use it for regular kitchen work too. I don't really use a blender for chopping, the knife and kitchen robot are better for me, but for liquids it's the way to go.
Questionable features are the digital timer and flashing lights, I don't know about Cuisinart's forays into electronics. I would expect those things to fail before the motor. And why a glass jar with a "durable" plastic handle, huh? As if they were trying to save weight on this one. It's some unnecessary cost-cutting that lowers the robustness a bit and makes cleaning a little trickier.
Separate ice crushing button and being able to add things through the top are both helpful features, and the warranty is excellent, they will usually stand by their products.

The "unique locking mechanism" or whatever they call it - for the jar lid - is cumbersome. Even when you think you know how it works you can still get bogged down just trying to set the lid in the jar. Also, it is terrible with ice cubes. It really leaves the cubes as is or barely touches them. If you do blended drinks this is not at all suitable.

The blender provides a 50-ounce calibrated glass jar, which offers a secure-fitting lid, a generous easy-grip handle, and a drip-free spout for graceful pouring. I was excited to get this Cuisinart a month or so ago because I love to cook, but I'm a college student who lives in an apartment. I don't have tons of space (or money, for that matter) to blow on two appliances. I have done many things with the SmartPower Duet, and it hasn't failed me yet. I've made deliciously smooth and thick shakes (including one with rum for a party - it was a hit.) I've made amazing salsa. I've made gazpacho. For some of these, I used the recipe book that comes with the machine. There are a lot of good recipes, indeed, but as an added bonus, the recipes give you helpful hints about how to use the appliance the best way - like, which ingredients to add first, instead of just shoving everything in.
Just last night I made a pasta salad with about twenty ingredients, most of which had to be chopped or minced or sliced, so I used the food processor with the chopper to pulverize the garlic and other spices into a nice smooth blend (thus avoiding the dreaded clumps of pungent garlic). Then, I took the spices out and added red and green peppers and other vegetables and chopped them up coarsely, like salsa. Then I put the slicer attachment on to the food processor and sliced perfectly thin slices of cucumber and red onion. I added this to some pasta, provolone cheese, and some olive oil, and voila, I had a great pasta salad in less than half of the time it would have taken me to prepare all of those veggies by hand.
I certainly haven't had any complaints about the workmanship. I love how it feels so sturdy without being bulky - the base is a little wider than most and not flimsy like most other blenders I've used, and the thick, glass blender jar is squat instead of tall and thin, which seems to make blending things a lot easier because the ingredients can easily move around near the blade. The keypad controls are enclosed so it's incredibly easy to clean up splatters and spills. The processor bowl doesn't seem to be flimsy to me (perhaps they've fixed the problem ?). In other words, this thing is great.

Cuisinart SPB SmartPower 40-Ounce 7-Speed Electronic Bar Blender Review

Cuisinart SPB SmartPower 40-Ounce 7-Speed Electronic Bar Blender
Average Reviews:

I've had this blender for about a year now, and use it regularly to make smoothies or soups. The 'digital' control panel seemed a little gimicky at first, but I've learned to appreciate the easy cleanup that it allows with a sponge. The wide openings of the heavy glass jar (which is much sturdier than most) allow for easy cleaning and pouring, and the motor has more than enough power for everything I've thrown at it.
My only complaint is that the rubber lid stained when I blended some hot tomato soup in it. The instruction manual warns against blending hot liquids however, and the stain is purely cosmetic and on the inside of the lid where it isn't visible. The plastic base of the jar also seems like it would be prone to snapping over time, but in my frequent use of the blender I haven't had any troubles with it.
Overall I would highly recommend this blender over the cheaper alternatives, the heavy glass jar, sharp blade and powerful motor make it a joy to use.

It's powerful, easy to use, sturdy, and efficient. The tight-fitting cover can be pressed on without turning or twisting it into place, and we found that it did not leak even under heavy use. The 2-ounce pour lid allows you to measure and add ingredients neatly without removing the cover. The 40-ounce glass jar has a wide mouth to allow chunky ingredients to be poured. The locking ring is self-aligning, so the glass blender jar slides easily into position, and the leakproof rubber gasket holds the glass jar snugly in place for safe operation. High-quality, patented stainless-steel blades are strong enough for all bar blender tasks, from crushing ice to puréeing fruit. The heavy-duty motor base is strong enough to crush ice without liquid and is backed by a three-year warranty. We use a blender about once a week for smoothies and crushed ice. We had a Black and Decker than burned out in less than 6 months, so we got this more expensive, supposedly higher quality Cuisinart as a replacement. It did a great job blending a smoothie, but it smelled like burning plastic with the first use and stopped working completely during the 3rd use - so it was promptly returned.
Also, the pitcher was awful other than the size. The lid was hard to use and it was impossible to pour a smoothie without spilling. Because it blended so well, we would have tried a replacement unit for the initial unit that quit, but couldn't tolerate the mess created with pouring.

SquareTrade 4-Year Appliances Warranty ($100-125 Items) Review

SquareTrade 4-Year Appliances Warranty ($100-125 Items)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I did a fair amount of looking into this extended warranty service since there weren't any Amazon reviews yet, so I thought I would report what I learned in case it is helpful to anyone else.
Short version for impatient readers:
====================================
If the item is $100 and the warranty is $25 for 4 years, then you're paying $25 for up to $100 of any repairs occurring within 4 years, with zero deductible. In effect, the first $25 of repair costs are prepaid (the purchase price of the warranty is basically an up-front, one-time deductible), and up to $75 of further repair costs will be free. This is a bad deal if you believe you're buying a reliable product, or you expect to upgrade within 2-3 years anyway (iPod, cell phone). This is a good deal if you believe there is a high risk of failure on an item you want to last you for 5+ years (microwave oven).
My rating is three stars because they're more likely to make money from you than you are to have a faulty product, and because I have no experience with their claims process.Long version for OCD consumers like myself:
====================================
THE SELLER
-------------------------
SquareTrade's rating as a seller on Amazon is very high, but skimming through those comments it appears they are all from customers who just purchased the service, not from customers who have seen their warranty through to the end. Unfortunately I didn't find any that commented on any their claims experience, as the quality of an extended warranty is ultimately decided by the fine print of the contract and the customer service of the claim process. But for what it's worth, I'd rate the ease of purchase 4-stars. The procedure is:
1) add to cart & purchase
2) create an account on the SquareTrade website
3) forward your Amazon purchase confirmation email to them with a special code copied from the SquareTrade site pasted into the subject line
4) no paperwork needs to be saved, the contract and receipt are maintained online
HOW IT WORKS
-------------------------
1) if your product breaks due to electrical or mechanical failure, file a claim through the SquareTrade website
2) they send you a free shipping label to send the item to their central repair center and they guarantee a 5-day turnaround or the price of your warranty is refunded
3) they decide whether to repair it or to reimburse you the original purchase price if the repair will be more expensive than the reimbursement
WHAT YOU'RE REALLY BUYING
-------------------------
The warranty works kind of like a debit account. If your original purchase price is $100, then the maximum value of the warranty is $100 and any repairs or reimbursements are deducted from that amount. For example, if they gave you a $100 repair or reimbursement in year 2 of a 4-year warranty, then the warranty "is considered fulfilled", in other words you are no longer covered for the remainder of the 4-year period.
During the time the product is covered by the original manufacturer's warranty, SquareTrade will do nothing more than give you the contact info to file a claim with the manufacturer. If the item is repaired or replaced by the manufacturer, the SquareTrade warranty will continue to apply to the repaired/replaced item from the original purchase date.
IS IT WORTH IT?
-------------------------
It depends on what product you'd be buying it for since repair rates and costs vary. Although their price is cheaper and/or their warranty is longer than some other options, 20-25% of the purchase price still isn't exactly cheap. And if this warranty worked out in the customer's favor more often than not then SquareTrade wouldn't be in business.
I purchased this warranty for a microwave oven, because in my opinion the failure rate is unacceptably high for any brand. I expect a microwave to last much more than four years but I don't trust that it will because it's not to the manufacturer's advantage for it to have a long life. Read the review section for any microwave on Amazon, on you will find from 10-50% of reviewers angry that their new microwave suddenly died. Many complain that their old [insert name brand] microwave lasted 10+ years, and this new [insert name brand] microwave died within two years. I suspect that microwaves are the sort of product that manufacturers have tuned their cost/quality/warranty trade-offs so that the price is low, the failure rate is high, and the mean-time-to-failure is only slightly longer than the typical warranty period of one year.
So I thought this coverage was worth it for a new microwave. If it dies, I'll essentially get a new one for $26. If it doesn't die, then I dodged a bullet and in four years I won't mind having paid $6.50/year for lemon insurance.

Cuisinart BFP-703CH SmartPower Duet Blender/Food Processor, Chrome Review

Cuisinart BFP-703CH SmartPower Duet Blender/Food Processor, Chrome
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been shopping for a new blender to replace my 1985 Osterizer, which has been leaving big chunks of ice in frozen drinks. I saw a really interesting consumer-oriented cooking show on the local PBS station one Saturday afternoon - they taste test their recipes on the public and test kitchen equipment. They had a test segment on blenders and claimed the fiftydollar Osterizer unit was the best, had the strongest motor and did a better job than even the hundredplusdollar blenders. I went out and bought one (actually, I got the Oster version of the Duet, with the blender and a food processor attachment). I quickly returned the Oster unit because 1) It could not a crush ice in frozen drinks and was actually worse than my 17 year old, worn out blender - it's pretty hard to suck a 3/4" ice rock up a straw; 2) Did not circulate thick liquids well unless stirred with a spoon through the hole in the top cover; 3) It was loud as heck; and 4) the food processor attachment was nearly useless because it was very small, only had a chopping blade and had no feeder - you unlatch the processor, empty out the one cup or so of chopped food, put more food inside, re-latch the processor lid and put back on the blender base.
After reading some of the reviews here, I was pretty much set on the similarly priced (one c-note) Kitchen Aid so I went to my local department store to look around and a bright and bubbly teenage sales clerk came up and asked me if I needed help. I almost said no (I can read the box myself) but instead decided not to exercise age discrimination and asked if she had any recommendations for blenders. Surprisingly, she said "Yes, I tested a bunch of them for a Christmas present for my dad a few months ago and the Cuisinart was definitely the best. It does the best job of crushing ice, is easy to clean up and my dad loves his!" Given that it came with a small food processor attachment for the same price as the Kitchen Aid and I had a 30 day return policy if I didn't like it, I decided to give it a shot. Here's my observations:
1) It blends great. It has as much power as you would ever need and frozen drinks come out smooth and frosty, they way they should. No more small icebergs clogging up the straws. You can dump a tray full of ice cubes into the blender, hit the "Ice Crusher" button, and it will give you a pitcher of finely crushed ice in about 30 seconds. Thick liquids still circulate well in the wide pitcher body.
2) It's quiet. I would say this blender puts out only about half the volume of noise that my old Oster unit or the newer one I returned did. Maybe there is a quieter unit on the market, but for the other reviewers complaining about the noise, I have to ask what they expect when blending ice cubes. No doubt, it makes more noise turning ice cubes into a liquid form than, say, a pot on the stove, but it is easily quiet enough to make a smoothie or margarita after midnight in an apartment without waking the neighbors.
3) The food processor works great. Sure it is smaller, at a 3-4 cup capacity, than the big 11 cup processors, but otherwise, it works exactly like its bigger brothers that made Cuisinart famous for the past several decades. I think the reviewer complaining about the processor must have had a few too many dacquiris or margaritas from his/her machine when he/she criticized this accessory. The feeding tube is a complete necessity for chopping more than a cup of food or using the grating and slicing blades (which work extremely well). So what if it sticks out a few inches? I used the processor to make hash browns for eight people for Easter brunch, and it did a great job of chopping the onions and shredding the potatoes; I did have to empty the moderately sized processor container twice while shredding the potatoes, but it only took about two minutes to turn eight medium-large potatoes into uniformly shredded hash browns.
4) It's easy to clean. The base unit just wipes clean, with no protruding buttons or difficult channels to clean out. The pitcher is also easy to rinse clean.
A big caveat: the reliability. I did not read the reviews here about the easily breakable plastic motor locking ring on the blender base until after my 30 day return period ended. So far, so good (I'm giving it a ***** rating based on my own experiences and am not going to let other reviewers' experiences change my score) but I really hope, knock-on-wood-fingers-crossed, that Cuisinart cured that defect by the time it got around to manufacturing my unit. It does have a heavy, very steady base and feels like a well made unit.
I hope I get many years of happy use out of my Duet, but will report back if I suffer the same problem that others have experienced.
EDIT 3/07:
Eventually, my Duet's blender unit failed, perhaps somewhat differently than others have reported. After about six years of frequent use, the black plastic gear ring on the bottom of the blender container that meshes with the drive unit in the base locked up on me and would not turn on the bottom of the blender, meaning the blade inside the blender to which it is attached would not turn. I contacted Cuisinart and bought a new one for around $10 or $12 shipped, took the old one off, installed the new one and in a few minutes had it running again good as new. I still really like the unit and think it is terrific. Spending a dozen dollars on a simple replacement part for an item we use so frequently is not unreasonable and I'm not lowering my score as a result of that temporary problem. In 2007 there are now a lot more higher end blenders available than there were when I bought this Cuisinart in 2001 and I'm sure some of them have even stronger motors and are slightly more quiet. However, this is still a very good unit and the hundred bucks I spent on it was money very well spent. Nowadays, I've seen this blender-food processor combo available for as low as half what I paid on sale and as low as fortybucks refurbished, so I doubt that there's anything on the market that is even close to being as good of a value.

I have really enjoyed using this product. I need to have easy-to-eat foods, so I started using blenders and a food processor to puree meals. What a pain, and the clean-up!! Don't get me started. This Cuisinart has saved the day. I fill it with the food I want to puree, add the liquid (needs more than you think) and then pulse. First on low, then high. I may take it off an shake it, and then run a bit more, occasionally I will run without pulsing for 30 secs. or so. Its fast!! It makes a smooth puree, better than my blender, better than my food processor and much quicker. Then I put the black top on the cup and viola, ready to eat. No other dishes needed. The clean up is easy -- just rinse the blade and put the top and cup in the dishwasher. There are plenty of cups and tops, so if I want to make another flavor or a side, I use another cup. This has been indispensable for me to eat regular food--the same food I make for my family, pureed. When I want hot items, I can put the cup in the microwave before or after blending, which makes it so much easier than a blender. For my needs this is perfect. I haven't used the grinding blade yet.
I'm having fun making great puree recipes...so much so, I'm thinking I should publish a book on them, or at least share with friends who are recovering and need easy to digest foods, or easy to eat foods.

Waring Pro SB10 Professional Immersion Blender, Black Review

Waring Pro SB10 Professional Immersion Blender, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After my 15 year old Braun immersion blender developed a crack in its fixed plastic shaft, I decided to do a little research on a new blender. I looked at the Cuisinart, Viking and Kitchen Aid blenders and saw a common complaint regarding the detachable shaft's gear mechanism stripping out after extended or heavy duty use. These blenders seem to employ a plastic gear which couples with the motor housing unit. It seemed odd to me that they would use such a method especially considering these models also have powerful 200w motors. One thing I also noticed was that people were using these blenders to crush ice and other really hard substances, which I would never even consider to do with an immersion blender. Immersion blenders were originally invented to blend sauces and soups in the saucepan, so you didn't have to transfer the contents to a conventional upright blender. I know that these manufacturers claim that you can chop ice and other things that a food processor or upright blender can do, but honestly, I think this is a reach for this type of appliance and you're only flirting with disaster if you use this device for purposes other than simply blending softer foods.
Back to the Waring immersion blender. Waring has a respected name in the commercial restaurant appliance market for many years and in fact, invented the first commercial electric upright blender. Fred Waring was a band leader from the swing era and prime investor in the original company, which is where the name comes from. Actually, I started looking at the professional, restaurant version of this model (WSB33) which retails at over twice this model's price and saw that the specs were identical except that the restaurant's version has a fixed, non-detachable shaft, a grounded 3-prong plug and only a 1 year warranty. This model (SB10) has a detachable shaft for convenient cleaning and a 5 year warranty. I was a little concerned about how the shaft attached to the motor housing, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that the metal shaft that the blade is attached to is directly inserted into the motor, much in the same way the rotor blades on a hand-held mixer is inserted into the mixer's motor housing. A logical approach and much more efficient way of transferring the energy of the motor to the shaft and blade.
Overall, this is an excellent value for $30, even though its motor is only 100w compared to some in this price range with double the wattage. Plus, Waring is well known in the commercial restaurant business for its high-end immersion blenders (some in the $600+ price range), so I figure they must know a thing or two about blenders considering their pedigree. This model works great if you respect the appliance for what it is: a pulse-style immersion blender for soups and sauces and light chopping; not a blender for making Daiquiris or frozen Margaritas. Leave that to the upright bar-style blenders.

Cuisinart SS-700 Single Serve Brewing System, Silver Review

This unit replaces a Keurig mini that I now us for travel. It makes a flavorful, hot cup of coffee. I have been a Keurig fan for three years. I purchased this machine in Feb. 2010 from BB&B. Like other readers, I have had a few pump problems when there seemed to be an air lock in the pump and water would not flow into the heating chamber. The instruction booklet tells you to turn it off and unplug the unit, then restart. I have found that when I refill the water tank I just need to make sure it is properly seated and tap it to make sure the water is getting into the hose that pumps it into the heating chamber. I also use the hot water feature the first "brew" after refilling the tank to make sure the pump is pulling water. (The easiest solution to the pump "problem" is to not take the water chamber off of the base and just refill it with a pitcher as needed.) I did some online research and found that this pump problem was suppose to have been fixed since I purchased my machine. I might have returned this machine for the newer "fixed" model if the BB&B where I purchased it had not closed. I love the coffee from this machine and have had no further pump issues since employing the solutions noted above.

Cuisinart CSB-77 SmartStick Hand Blender Review

I purchased this product mainly for making soups. I hated having to put soup into the blender in bathces to puree it. Not only was this time consuming but I usually made a huge mess in the process. Well this product solved that problem for me. I made a soup the other day and used this product to blend the soup right in the pot! While I was nervous about "only" being able to run the blender continuously for 50 seconds, I learned that 50 seconds is more than enough time for this item to blend a whole pot of soup, in fact it only took about 15-20 seconds.
I have also used the grinder attachment to mince fresh parsley, and have also made a smoothie using the included measuring cup and blender.
Although the manual states that you cannot run this product for more than a certain amount of time (depending on the function), I have learned that this product can accomplish those tasks easily in the time frames given (it took 5 seconds to mince my parsley!).
I cannot comment on the warranty as I have not had a problem with this item, but for the price if it fails I would most likely just buy a new one.
My only complaint would be that the whisk attachment seems very flimsy, but I have not actually used the whisk attachment yet, so I assume that it will work just fine for light tasks such as whisking egg whites. Although based on the feel of it I would not use it for much else.
However, I have a feeling that I am going to continue to find uses for this wonderful little gadget. For the price this item is a great buy.

I got this for my parents for Christmas. They have been using it regularly for about a month intensively and it has worked beatifully. It is a high quality product, looks great, and takes up much less space than having two separate blender and food processor units.
