All you need is a good starter culture, a stable and appropriate temperature and clean equipment so you get the proper cultures growing. The Salton 1-quart does a beautiful job and you can't beat the price. If you've never made your own yogurt before, this is the unit to buy. Don't spend tons of money on a piece of equipment that does nothing more than keep the milk warm for a few hours. Realize, it is much easier to just buy yogurt at the supermarket. But if you don't like keep buying little plastic containers, and if you don't mind going to just a little effort to make your own foods, you'll enjoy making yogurt. I like to use milk straight from the bulk tank at a local dairy farm and either organic Stonyfield (NH)or organic Butterworks (VT) yogurt as a starter. Homemade yogurt doesn't always have the homogenous and solid consistency of store-bought, but I've had very good results (quite comparable with commercial yogurts) with the Salton, plus I can use whatever flavorings I want from real maple syrup to my favorite jams. I even use the yogurt in place of sour cream. The possibilities with home-made yogurt are almost unlimited!

(More customer reviews)Put 3 or 4 ice cubes in and they crushed easily. Add more, no problem, add more, machine starts just spinning in place. Now if you add frozen berries, blades still spinning with no action. Add liquid, good results. Add one frozen berry at a time and you get a nice smoothy. If mixture gets too thick, will not blend but just spins blades. I put in a can of sweet potatos added some water, turned dial to "baby food", no blending, blades spinning. Added a LOT more water, and it worked beautifully. I said it's inconsistant because it works great if you keep stirring and poking the ingredients down toward the blades or add enough liquid or make sure you add the frozen things first but not too many of them or one at a time after you've added liquid. Seems like a lot of work but I have nothing else to compare it to. My only other blender is 18 year old oster and couldn't even handle one ice cube so this seems like an improvement. Still might take it back to BBB and try another brand. When it works, and you do everything just right, you get a wonderful results.

Cuisinart CSB-77 SmartStick Hand Blender Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased this product mainly for making soups. I hated having to put soup into the blender in bathces to puree it. Not only was this time consuming but I usually made a huge mess in the process. Well this product solved that problem for me. I made a soup the other day and used this product to blend the soup right in the pot! While I was nervous about "only" being able to run the blender continuously for 50 seconds, I learned that 50 seconds is more than enough time for this item to blend a whole pot of soup, in fact it only took about 15-20 seconds.
I have also used the grinder attachment to mince fresh parsley, and have also made a smoothie using the included measuring cup and blender.
Although the manual states that you cannot run this product for more than a certain amount of time (depending on the function), I have learned that this product can accomplish those tasks easily in the time frames given (it took 5 seconds to mince my parsley!).
I cannot comment on the warranty as I have not had a problem with this item, but for the price if it fails I would most likely just buy a new one.
My only complaint would be that the whisk attachment seems very flimsy, but I have not actually used the whisk attachment yet, so I assume that it will work just fine for light tasks such as whisking egg whites. Although based on the feel of it I would not use it for much else.
However, I have a feeling that I am going to continue to find uses for this wonderful little gadget. For the price this item is a great buy.

The brushed chrome construction looks great and is also easier to clean than plastic versions. Handy features like detachable base, included mixing cup and extra long mixer are thoughtful and useful. The motor is smooth and powerful - it is the Audi V8 of the hand blender world. For the quality, brand and power, $30 is an absolute steal.
